The temple keeps long hours, open every day from 4:00 AM to 8:00 PM, and entry is completely free, with no ticket and no VIP line; everyone stands in the same queue. The morning aarti is shortly after the opening, around 5:00 AM, and the evening Sandhya aarti at sunset, usually between 6:30 and 7:00 PM by the season. The finest time to come is the morning, from about 6:00 to 11:00 AM, when the crowds are fewest and the riverside quiet is exceptional; for this is a serene local shrine, far from the bustle of the great city temples, with a distinct air of loving stillness.

ॐShri Chakra Madhav Mandir: the discus-bearing Madhav

As Kashi is the Shiv Nagari, the city of Shiva, so Prayag is the Vishnu Nagari, the city of Vishnu, guarded on every side by the twelve Madhavs, the twelve forms of the Lord. And among them is Shri Chakra Madhav, whose serene temple stands at Arail, on the far, quiet southern bank of the Sangam across the Yamuna, near a temple of Hanuman. He is the Vishnu of the Chakra, the discus; and his is a shrine of a rare and lovely stillness, a place of loving energy and deep silence by the majestic river, cherished by the pilgrim who would complete the full circuit of the guardians of the holy city.

ॐThe discus-bearing Vishnu: the Sudarshan Chakra

The name of the deity holds his form and his might. For the twelve Madhavs of Prayag are named each for one of the four sacred emblems that Lord Vishnu bears in his four hands: the Shankha, the conch; the Gada, the mace; the Padma, the lotus; and the Chakra, the discus. And here we come to the Chakra Madhav, the Lord of the discus. The Sudarshan Chakra, the discus of Vishnu, is the mightiest of all his weapons, a spinning wheel of razor-edged light, ever revolving, that flies at the Lord's will to destroy the demons and all the powers of darkness and to uphold the order of the cosmos; it is the very discus that, in the tale of the goddess Sati, cut her body into the parts that became the Shakti Peethas. So Chakra Madhav is the Vishnu who wields the Sudarshan Chakra, the Lord in his form of the destruction of evil and the protection of the good; the discus-bearing Madhav, even as the Gada Madhav bears the mace.

ॐThe twelve guardians of Prayag: Brahma's first yajna

To understand Chakra Madhav is to understand the beautiful origin of all the twelve Madhavs, which reaches back to the very dawn of creation. For after Lord Brahma had created the universe, he performed, here at Prayag, the first great yajna, the first cosmic sacrifice of all the ages; and it is from this first sacrifice that Prayag is honoured as the Tirtharaj, the King of all the pilgrimage places. And to sanctify this holiest of fields, and to mark and to guard its sacred boundaries, twelve forms of Lord Vishnu, the Dwadash Madhav, were established as the kshetra-palas, the guardians of the sacred field, each stationed at his own appointed point and in his own direction around the immortal Akshayavat, the deathless tree at the very heart of Prayag. And Chakra Madhav is set in the Agni Kona, the south-eastern quarter, guarding that direction with his discus. So the twelve Madhavs together define the whole spiritual perimeter of the holy city, its guardians in all directions; and it is held, in the Skanda and the Matsya Puranas, that to walk their sacred circuit is a merit equal to encircling the entire cosmos.

ॐThe Dwadash Madhav Parikrama and the ancestral rites

Chakra Madhav is thus a station upon the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, the sacred circuit of all twelve Madhavs, which the pilgrims of Prayag undertake for the highest merit; for it is the belief of the holy city that the full fruit of the holy bath at the Triveni Sangam is realised only upon the completion of the circuit of the twelve guardians. And there is a further and profound grace: the Matsya Purana teaches that Vishnu, as Madhav, is the very presiding force over Prayag, and that his twelve forms together govern the liberation of the souls of the ancestors; so that the sacred rites for the departed, the Pind Daan and the Shraddha, performed at the Sangam, reach their highest potency when joined to the worship of the Madhavs. To bow before Chakra Madhav on the parikrama is part of that great and ancient devotion.

ॐThe discus-bearing Lord across the river, in my own words

I love taking my pilgrims across the Yamuna to Chakra Madhav at Arail, above all by boat from the Sangam, which is a beautiful ride; and when we arrive at that quiet riverside shrine, the peace of it always touches people. I explain that this is the Vishnu of the Sudarshan Chakra, the great discus that destroys all evil, one of our twelve Madhavs; and I tell them the beautiful story of the twelve, how after Brahma did the first yajna of the whole universe right here at Prayag, the twelve forms of Vishnu were set to guard the sacred field in all directions, and this Chakra Madhav guards the south-east corner by the immortal Akshayavat.

And I tell them the wonderful thing, that our old books say to walk the full circuit of the twelve, the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, is like walking around the whole cosmos in merit, and that it completes our Sangam pilgrimage and gives our ancestral rites their full power. For the devout, I plan the whole parikrama; and I always show them how Chakra Madhav pairs with our mace-bearing Gada Madhav, the discus and the mace of the Lord. We offer Tulsi and yellow flowers and chant the Vishnu Sahasranama. It is a serene, powerful, lovely place across the river, and I love to share it.

In more than forty years of guiding, that quiet boat to the discus-bearing Lord across the river is among the most peaceful things I share.
