The temple keeps a split day, open from 6:00 AM to noon and again from 4:00 PM to 9:30 PM, closed through the afternoon for the rest of the deity. Its aartis are the morning Mangala aarti at 6:15 AM and the evening Sandhya aarti from about 7:00 to 7:30 PM. Entry is free, and the crowd here is naturally lower than at the Sangam or the great Hanuman temple, so the queue moves quickly; the temple sees a heavy rush only at the great festivals, the Magh Mela, Kartik Purnima, and the special Dwadash Madhav Parikrama days. The best time is the morning, from about 6:00 to 11:00 AM.

ॐManohar Madhav Temple: the enchanting Vishnu

As Kashi is the Shiv Nagari, the city of Shiva, so Prayag is the Vishnu Nagari, the city of Vishnu, guarded on every side by the twelve Madhavs, the twelve forms of the Lord. And among them is Manohar Madhav, the Vishnu worshipped as Manohar, the Enchanting One, whose idol, the Lord with Mata Lakshmi at his side, is enshrined within the ancient Dravyashwarnath temple in the old market heart of the city at Chowk. It is a traditional, historic, community-revered shrine, set amid the bustle of the old bazaar; and it bears one of the most beautiful of all the names of the Lord, for here the Madhav is the Captivator of the Heart, the supremely beautiful and enchanting Lord.

ॐManohar: the captivator of the heart

The name of this Madhav is a name of beauty. Manohar is made of man, the mind or the heart, and har, to steal or to seize or to captivate; and so Manohar means the one who steals the heart, the enchanting, the captivating, the supremely beautiful and charming one. It is a name beloved of Lord Vishnu and of Lord Krishna, whose beauty and whose grace steal away the hearts of all who behold them. So Manohar Madhav is the Vishnu as the Enchanting One, the Captivator of all hearts, the Lord whose loveliness and whose charm draw the very soul of the devotee toward him; for in our tradition, to behold the beauty of the Lord is itself a grace and a liberation, the heart being lifted and captured, in the sweetest way, by the divine. To stand before Manohar Madhav is to offer one's heart to be stolen by the beauty of God.

ॐThe Lord who bestows beauty, prosperity and righteousness

From the enchanting Lord flow three great graces, and it is for these that the devout come to Manohar Madhav; for the scriptures of the place tell that his darshan and worship bestow beauty, prosperity, and righteousness. Beauty, saundarya, for the enchanting Lord gives of his own loveliness to his devotees, gracing them with a beauty of face and, more truly, of soul. Prosperity, for here the Lord is worshipped not alone but together with Mata Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and fortune and abundance, as the divine couple, the Lakshmi-Narayan, from whom flows all good fortune. And righteousness, dharma, the right and virtuous and blessed life, which is the truest wealth of all. So the devotee comes to the enchanting Lord and his Lakshmi to pray for beauty, for fortune, and for a life of dharma, the three great goods of a blessed life; and it is a lovely thing to seek them at the feet of so beautiful a Lord.

ॐThe Dravyashwarnath complex and the Parikrama

There is a further grace in the setting of Manohar Madhav, for the Madhav is housed within the ancient Prachin Dravyashwarnath temple, which is itself a shrine of Lord Shiva; so that here, at one holy spot, the Lord Vishnu and the Lord Shiva keep company, in that harmony of Hari and Har, of Vishnu and Shiva as one, which our tradition holds most dear. And Manohar Madhav is one of the great company of the twelve Madhavs, and a station upon the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, the sacred circuit of all twelve, which the pilgrims of Prayag undertake for the highest merit; for it is held that the full fruit of the Sangam bath is realised only upon the completion of the round of the twelve, and that to walk it is a merit equal to encircling the whole cosmos.

ॐThe Enchanting Lord, in my own words

I love bringing my pilgrims into the old market to Manohar Madhav, because the name is so beautiful and the meaning so sweet. I explain that Manohar means the one who steals the heart, the Enchanting One, and that this is our Vishnu in his most beautiful and captivating form, worshipped here with his Lakshmi. And I tell them the lovely blessing, that our scriptures say his darshan gives three things, beauty, prosperity, and a righteous life; so people come here to pray for a good and blessed life in every way.

And I show them the beautiful thing about the setting, that our Manohar Madhav lives inside a Shiva temple, the Dravyashwarnath, so here Vishnu and Shiva are together, Hari and Har, which our people love. I fit Manohar Madhav into the full Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, our circuit of the twelve; and I always warn my guests that it is deep in the old bazaar with very narrow lanes, so we go by auto and walk the last bit. It is a lovely, sweet, deeply devotional shrine in the heart of the old city, and I love to share the beauty of the Enchanting Lord there.

Manohar Madhav is within the Dravyashwarnath temple at Johnstonganj, Chowk, in the old market district; the lanes are narrow and congested with no car parking, so come by auto-rickshaw or bike to Johnstonganj or Chowk, then walk the last stretch.
