The shrine opens around 7:00 AM and closes between 6:00 and 8:00 PM, by the season and the fort's rules; and the finest time to come is the morning, from about 7:00 to 11:00 AM, right after taking the holy dip at the Sangam. The daily aartis are aligned with the sun: the morning aarti around 7:30 AM, after the opening and purification, and the evening aarti around 6:00 PM, before the fort gates close to the public. Entry is free. As the site is within the Army fort area, carry a photo ID; and much more of the area opens to all pilgrims during the Kumbh and Magh Mela.

ॐSri Adi Vat Madhav: the first of the twelve Madhavs

Among the many deities of the sacred confluence, Sri Adi Vat Madhav holds a place of the first honour, for he is recognised as the first and the primary of the Dwadash Madhav, the twelve Madhavs, the twelve forms of Lord Vishnu that guard the holy city of Prayag. He is the primal Vishnu of the Sangam, worshipped at the immortal Akshayavat within the sacred complex of the old Fort, close by the underground Patalpuri; and to take his darshan, right after the holy dip at the Triveni Sangam, is a cherished part of the Prayag pilgrimage. As the first of the Madhavs, he is also the beginning of the great circuit of the twelve, the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama; and so the pilgrim's way at Prayag begins, in a sense, with him.

ॐThe primal Vishnu of the immortal banyan

The name of the deity holds his whole meaning, and binds him to the deathless heart of Prayag. Adi means the first, the primal, the original; Vat means the banyan, and here it is the Akshayavat, the immortal, undying banyan tree of the Sangam; and Madhav is a name of Lord Vishnu. So Adi Vat Madhav is the primal Vishnu of the immortal banyan, the first form of the Lord worshipped at the deathless tree. For the great Akshayavat itself, the tree that never perishes and shall alone remain at the end of the world, is revered as a very manifestation of Lord Vishnu; and beneath and beside it the Lord is enshrined as Adi Vat Madhav, the primal Madhav, safeguarding both the immortal tree and the holy confluence. And here too, the tradition tells, Lord Ram himself, in the days of his exile, worshipped at the Akshayavat and performed the sacred rites for his father; so the spot is hallowed by the Lord and by his devotees alike. ॐThe Dwadash Madhav and the great Parikrama

Adi Vat Madhav is the first of a great company: the Dwadash Madhav, the twelve Madhavs, the twelve divine forms of Vishnu set to guard the holy city of Prayag, among them the Veni Madhav, the Adi Madhav, the Bindu Madhav, the Gada Madhav, the Chakra Madhav and the rest, scattered across the sacred landscape of the city and its river-banks. And there is a great and ancient devotion built upon them: the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, the sacred circuit of all twelve, which the tradition holds was first begun by the great sage Bharadwaj himself, in the age of the Treta Yuga, at his ashram here at Prayag. Through the long centuries the circuit was interrupted, and several of its temples scattered or lost in the Mughal and British ages; but it was lovingly revived in the year 1961 by the saints of the age, and it flourishes today, above all in the Magh and the Kumbh. And the belief that crowns it is this: that the full fruit of the holy bath at the Sangam, and of the Kalpvas, the month-long austerity by the river, is realised only upon the completion of the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama. And it is here, at Adi Vat Madhav, the first Madhav, that this great circuit of the twelve guardians of Prayag begins.

ॐThe first Madhav, in my own words

When I take my pilgrims to the Akshayavat in the Fort, I explain that the Vishnu worshipped there at the immortal tree is Adi Vat Madhav, the first of our twelve Madhavs, the primal Vishnu of the deathless banyan. I tell them what the name means, Adi the first, Vat the immortal tree, Madhav the Lord Vishnu, and they love how it all fits together, the first Vishnu of the deathless tree, guarding our Sangam. And I always take them for his darshan right after the Sangam snan, which is our tradition.

And then I tell them about the great Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, our circuit of the twelve Vishnu temples that guard Prayag, which our own sage Bharadwaj began in the Treta Yuga, and how it is believed the full fruit of the Sangam bath comes only when you complete the whole round of the twelve. For the devout who wish it, I arrange the full parikrama, beginning here at Adi Vat Madhav, the first Madhav. I always remind them, of course, that this is inside the army fort, so we carry our ID and go by e-rickshaw or boat; and I make sure they do not confuse this first Madhav with our Veni Madhav in Daraganj, the city's Nagar Devta. It is a deep and beautiful part of our pilgrimage, and I love to share it.

In more than forty years of guiding, beginning the great circuit of the twelve Madhavs here at the first of them is among the most meaningful things I share.

Adi Vat Madhav is at the Akshayavat, within the Allahabad Fort complex by the Sangam, near the Patalpuri Temple; as it is in the Army fort area, come by e-rickshaw or by boat from the Sangam ghats, not by private car, and carry your ID.

• Remove footwear and be reverent; offer Tulsi and yellow flowers in the Vaishnava custom.
• Respect the Army's rules and security, and carry and show your ID.
• Follow any photography restrictions within the fort and the shrine.
• Keep to the queue and the attendants' guidance, especially in the Mela season.
