ॐChhapaiya: the birthplace of Bhagwan Swaminarayan

Of all the places sacred to the Swaminarayan faith across the world, none is more precious than this: Chhapaiya, the very village where Bhagwan Swaminarayan was born. It was here, in this quiet village near Ayodhya, that on the sacred day of Ram Navami in the year 1781, in a devout Brahmin family, the Lord took birth as the child Ghanshyam. And so, from every corner of India and from across the seas, the devotees of Swaminarayan come to Chhapaiya as to the holiest ground of their faith, the place where their Lord entered the world; for a Swaminarayan devotee, to stand at Chhapaiya is to stand at the source. It is a beautiful and fitting thing that the Lord chose to be born so near Ayodhya, the city of Ram, and on Ram's own birthday, so that the birthplace pilgrimage joins the two great devotions.

ॐGhanshyam Bhavan and the settings of the Lord's childhood

The heart of the Chhapaiya pilgrimage is the Ghanshyam Bhavan, the shrine that stands upon the very spot where Bhagwan Swaminarayan was born, its sanctum now graced with marble; here the devotee comes to the exact place of the Lord's birth, and it is a moment of the deepest emotion. Beside it stands the great Shree Swaminarayan Mandir for darshan and worship. But the wonder of Chhapaiya is that the whole village is a living map of the Lord's childhood, for here the boy Ghanshyam grew up and performed his early lilas, his divine pastimes, and the pilgrim may walk the very ground where they happened.

There is the Narayan Sarovar, the sacred pool just by the mandir, where the child Ghanshyam would bathe. There is the Meen Sarovar, the fish lake, where, tradition tells, the child brought dead fish back to life and gently taught the fisherman never again to take life for his living, a first, tender lesson of compassion and non-violence. There is the Trikonyu Khetar, the triangular field, where the boy sent the birds into a blissful trance. And there is the shrine that marks where the child Lord, still an infant, overcame the demon Kalidutt who came to harm him. To walk from spot to spot is to follow the footsteps of the divine child through his own village, and it moves every devotee beyond words.

ॐGhanshyam: the divine child of Chhapaiya

The devotees of Swaminarayan hold that the birth at Chhapaiya was no ordinary birth, but the descent of the Supreme, come to protect dharma and to lift the suffering of the world. To a devout Brahmin couple, Dharmadev and Bhaktimata, was born, on Ram Navami in 1781, the child they named Ghanshyam, and whom the world would come to know as Bhagwan Swaminarayan. He was a wonder from the first, a prodigy of the scriptures and a worker of the gentle miracles his village still remembers; and here at Chhapaiya he spent the years of his childhood, until, at the age of only eleven, after the passing of his parents, he left this village to set out alone across all of India as the young yogi Neelkanth Varni, the journey that would give birth to the whole Swaminarayan faith. So Chhapaiya holds the beginning of it all, the cradle of the Lord and of his mission.

ॐThe mandir, the aartis and the festivals

The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir at Chhapaiya is a beautiful and well-kept temple, cared for and renewed over the generations to welcome the rising numbers of pilgrims, with a Bhakti Niwas for those who wish to stay. Its worship follows the loving, disciplined Swaminarayan way, with the five daily aartis marking the day. The village comes most gloriously to life at its festivals: above all at the Swaminarayan Jayanti, the birthday of the Lord, kept on Ram Navami, the very day and place of his birth, a supremely auspicious coming-together; and at the great Chhapaiya Mahotsav and other festival fairs, when devotees gather in their thousands in devotion and joy.

ॐThe homeland pilgrimage: Chhapaiya and Ayodhya

The most complete and beautiful way to honour Bhagwan Swaminarayan in his homeland is to make the two together: the birthplace here at Chhapaiya, and the Swaminarayan temple in the city of Ayodhya, in the sacred region where the Lord was born and spent his early life. And since the Lord was born on Ram Navami, in Ram's own region, many pilgrims weave in the darshan of Ram's Ayodhya too, so that the whole pilgrimage becomes a joining of devotions. Taking Swaminarayan pilgrims out to Chhapaiya is one of the great joys of my work, because I get to bring them to the very cradle of their Lord. I tell them as we drive out from Ayodhya: we are going to the place where Bhagwan Swaminarayan was born, on Ram Navami, right here near Ram's own city. And when they reach the Ghanshyam Bhavan, on the exact spot of the birth, I have seen the most devout among them overcome with emotion, to stand at the source of their whole faith. It is a profound thing to witness.

And then I love to walk them through the childhood spots, the sarovar where the little Ghanshyam bathed, the lake where He brought the fish back to life and told the fisherman to spare them, the field of the birds. To follow the footsteps of the divine child through His own village, that is the beauty of Chhapaiya. I always plan it with the Swaminarayan temple in Ayodhya, so my guests do the whole homeland pilgrimage, the birthplace and the city, and, if they wish, Ram's Ayodhya too. For the millions of Swaminarayan devotees in the world, this quiet village is the holiest ground of all, and it is a privilege to bring them home to it.
