On Tarun Pura Road in the New Colony of Ayodhya stands Shri Digamber Jain Mandir, a peaceful temple of the Digambar Jain tradition, one of the several Jain shrines that make this quarter of Ayodhya a place of gentle, devout Jain life. Within, the Tirthankara is worshipped in the plain, serene manner of the Digambar way, and the daily prayers and aarti are kept morning and evening. It is a calm, uncrowded, and reverent place, a haven for the quiet worship and inner reflection that lie at the heart of the Jain path, and it is dear to the Digambar Jains of the city and to the pilgrims who come to the sacred birthplace of the Tirthankaras.

ॐThe Jain quarter of Ayodhya

This temple is best understood as part of a whole quarter of Jain devotion, for the New Colony, Tarun Pura Road and Raiganj area of Ayodhya holds a rich concentration of Jain shrines, most of them of the Digambar tradition. Chief and grandest among them is the great Rishabhdev Digambar Jain Mandir, the Badi Murti, only a little way off, with its magnificent thirty-one-foot marble statue of Bhagwan Adinath, the first Tirthankara; and around it are gathered this and other Digambar mandirs, so that the whole quarter hums quietly with Jain worship. For a Jain pilgrim, or a lover of Ayodhya's many faiths, to walk this quarter is to feel the deep, living presence of the Jain tradition in the city; and this temple is a peaceful part of it.

ॐAyodhya, the sacred birthplace of the Tirthankaras

The reason for all this Jain devotion in Ayodhya is one of the great glories of the city, less known than its fame as the birthplace of Lord Ram, yet equally profound: Ayodhya is one of the holiest cities in all of Jainism, honoured as the birthplace of five of the twenty-four Tirthankaras, chief among them Bhagwan Rishabhdev, or Adinath, the very first Tirthankara and founder of the Jain dharma, together with the Lords Ajitnath, Abhinandannath, Sumatinath and Anantnath. Some eighteen of the great Kalyanaks, the auspicious life-events of these Tirthankaras, are held to have taken place on this single sacred ground. And beautifully, the two faiths are joined here, for Rishabhdev is revered as the founder of the very Ikshvaku dynasty of which Lord Ram was the great descendant. So this quiet temple stands in a city that is a supreme tirtha of the Jains as much as of the Hindus; the fuller story of that Jain glory is told at the great Badi Murti temple.

When I bring Jain pilgrims to Ayodhya, I take them through the whole Jain quarter of New Colony and Raiganj, because it is a lovely, peaceful part of the city that most visitors never see. This Shri Digamber Jain Mandir is one of the calm Digambar temples of the quarter, and I like to bring my guests here for a quiet darshan, away from the crowds, and then walk them across to the great Badi Murti with its towering statue of Adinath. I always explain to them the glory of it: that Ayodhya is not only Ram's birthplace but the birthplace of five Jain Tirthankaras, the first of them Rishabhdev, the founder of the Jain faith. My Jain guests are always so moved to be in this holy quarter of their own tradition.

I fit this temple into the whole Ayodhya Jain trail, this and the Badi Murti and the Shwetambar temple and the old Katra temple and the tonks by the Saryu, so my pilgrims see the full Jain Ayodhya. And I tell them the beautiful shared story, that Rishabhdev founded the Ikshvaku line that Ram was born into, so both faiths honour the same city and the same royal house. For a Jain pilgrim, this peaceful quarter, with its many temples, is a deeply meaningful place, and I never let them miss it.

In more than forty years of guiding, this quiet Jain quarter is one of the gentlest, most peaceful parts of Ayodhya I share.
