AyodhyaDeepotsav in Ayodhya: the first Diwali, lit again on the Saryu
By Rajeev Sharma
Varanasi-born Pilgrimage Guide
Deepotsav (दीपोत्सव) is Ayodhya's grand re-lighting of the first Diwali, held on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, falling on Friday, 7 November 2026, the eve of Diwali. More than 28 lakh diyas are lit together across 56 ghats of the Saryu at Ram ki Paidi, the largest oil-lamp display on earth. varanasiayodhyatours.com secures the free ghat e-pass, holds a viewing position and plans the Ram Mandir darshan, on WhatsApp.

Deepotsav 2026 date and timing
Deepotsav falls on Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, the day before Diwali: Friday, 7 November 2026. The lighting is an evening event; the diyas go alight together at sunset.
Timing
Why is Deepotsav celebrated?
Deepotsav re-enacts the original Diwali: the night the people of Ayodhya lit rows of lamps to welcome Lord Rama home after fourteen years of exile and the defeat of Ravana. That homecoming is the Diwali the whole country keeps; Ayodhya keeps it at the source. The modern Deepotsav grew from a state initiative in 2017 into a global event, and since the Ram Mandir's consecration in January 2024 it carries a new weight: for the first time in five centuries, Rama is present in his birthplace temple on the Diwali eve. Each year a performer as Rama, with Sita and Lakshman, descends by helicopter as the Pushpak Vimana, and tens of thousands weep at the arrival.
From the ground: for my Telugu and Kannada guests, this is the Diwali story you grew up on, watched at the place it happened, narrated in your language as the ghats catch light.
How the day unfolds
- Daytime: Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi darshan before the city tightens; exhibitions and the new attractions near the Ram Janmabhoomi corridor.
- Afternoon: the symbolic arrival of Rama by helicopter at Ramkatha Park, and the international Ramleela performances.
- By 4 pm: ghat positions fill; e-pass holders take their places at Ram ki Paidi.
- Sunset: the simultaneous lighting of more than 28 lakh diyas across 56 ghats, the mass Saryu Aarti, then laser mapping and fireworks.
- Night: the ghats glow late; the city eases into Diwali itself the next day.
The diya record: a number that grows every year
Ayodhya has broken its own Guinness World Record almost every Deepotsav. The count has climbed from 1.71 lakh diyas in 2017 to 3.01 lakh (2018), 6.06 lakh (2020), 15.76 lakh (2022), 22.23 lakh (2023), 25.12 lakh (2024), and 26.17 lakh verified by Guinness in 2025, when 2,128 people also performed the largest simultaneous aarti. The 2026 target is around 28 lakh across 56 ghats, with the newly added Laxman Kila Ghat, over 30,000 volunteers, and more than 75,000 litres of oil. The count is verified by drone on the night.
Where to be on Deepotsav
- Ram ki Paidi: the heart of the illumination and the mass aarti; the e-pass ghats are here.
- The Saryu ghats along the 56-ghat stretch: the panorama of lamps reflected on the river.
- Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi: darshan in the daytime, before the crowd peaks.
- Ramkatha Park: the Pushpak Vimana arrival and the main cultural stage.
- A held e-pass position by 4 pm: the difference between seeing it and pushing through it.
Crowds and the e-pass
Darshan and access: the honest truth
Two honest facts shape this day. First, the ghat viewing at Ram ki Paidi needs a free e-pass issued by the administration against a government ID; foreign nationals use a passport. It is free. Anyone selling you a "Deepotsav VIP ghat ticket" is selling a free pass at a markup, or selling nothing. We register and secure the pass in your name and hold the position; that is a service, not a sale of access. Second, Ram Mandir darshan is free every day, with no paid public VIP, and around a festival this size the slots are managed for everyone equally. What a good operator adds is the pass logistics, the ghat position, the darshan timing and the gate, not access that money cannot honestly buy.
How to reach Ayodhya for Deepotsav
Fly into Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham, or into Lucknow (about 135 km); trains serve Ayodhya Dham Junction. From Varanasi it is about 200 km, roughly four hours in the Innova Crysta, which is how our Ayodhya-Varanasi itineraries run it. On the day, vehicles stop well out and the ghats are reached on foot or by e-rickshaw. Full detail in the How to Reach guide.
Where to stay for Deepotsav
Ayodhya's hotels fill completely by October for Deepotsav. Our packages base you at the Taj Ganges or Hilton Varanasi with breakfast and arrange the Ayodhya festival night, because the ghat night ends late and a highway drive afterwards is no way to end it. More options in the Stay & Hotels guide.
What to carry, and what not
- The government photo ID used for the e-pass; foreign nationals carry the passport.
- Phones, cameras and bags are not allowed inside Ram Mandir; travel light on darshan day.
- Bags and large purses are restricted at ghat security; minimal only.
- Early November evenings on the Saryu are cool; a light layer.
- Reach the ghat by 4 pm; the lighting is at sunset and the roads harden before it.

Frequently Asked Questions
When is Deepotsav 2026?
Friday, 7 November 2026, Kartik Krishna Chaturdashi, the eve of Diwali. The lighting is at sunset at Ram ki Paidi.
Do I need a pass for Deepotsav?
Yes, for the Ram ki Paidi ghat viewing: a free official e-pass issued against a government ID. We register and secure it in your name.
How many diyas are lit at Deepotsav?
The 2026 target is around 28 lakh across 56 ghats, extending Ayodhya's own Guinness record of 26.17 lakh verified in 2025. They are lit together at sunset and counted by drone.
Is Deepotsav the same as Diwali?
It is the eve of Diwali, the day Ayodhya re-enacts Rama's homecoming that Diwali celebrates. Diwali itself is the next day; Deepotsav is the ghat illumination.
Is Ram Mandir darshan possible on Deepotsav?
Yes, free and in managed slots; we plan the morning window before the ghat crowd builds. There is no paid VIP darshan.
How is Deepotsav different from Dev Deepawali in Varanasi?
Deepotsav is Ayodhya's Diwali-eve lamp record on the Saryu, honouring Rama's return; Dev Deepawali is Varanasi's Kartik Purnima lamp night on the Ganga, about three weeks later, honouring the gods. Different cities, rivers and dates.
Can foreign nationals attend?
Yes; register for the e-pass online and carry a passport as ID.
How crowded is it?
Lakhs on a single evening, with vehicle restrictions and pass-controlled ghats. It is manageable with the pass secured and the position held by 4 pm; it is chaos without.
Is it suitable for elderly pilgrims?
Yes with planning: a held ghat position rather than a late push, morning darshan at the quiet slot, and the Innova staged close. Tell us ages and mobility on WhatsApp.
How early should I book?
Three to four months. Ayodhya fills by October and the pass window opens weeks ahead.
