Kumbh Mela and the Sangam: when the next one is, and what to do until then

The Kumbh is the largest peaceful gathering of human beings on earth: a mass pilgrimage to bathe at a sacred river when the planets align, rooted in the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, when drops of amrit fell at four places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain. A snan at the right place in the right window is held to wash away sins and carry the soul toward moksha. UNESCO inscribed the Kumbh Mela as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2017. At Prayagraj, the bathing place is the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna visibly meet and the Saraswati is believed to join them unseen.

Each of the four cities hosts a full (Purna) Kumbh once every 12 years, so a Kumbh happens somewhere in India roughly every three years. Prayagraj and Haridwar also hold an Ardh Kumbh at the six-year midpoint. The Maha Kumbh, rarest of all, comes to Prayagraj once in 144 years, after twelve full cycles; that is what the world saw in 2025. This is why "when is the next Kumbh" has two honest answers: Nashik in 2027 for the cycle, and around 2031 at Prayagraj for the Sangam itself.

From the ground: guests ask me if they missed everything by missing 2025. No. The Sangam does not close between Kumbhs; it holds the Magh Mela every single January, with the same snan days, the same akharas' presence in Magh, and a fraction of the crowd.

Each year through the month of Magh, a tent city rises on the Prayagraj sands for the Magh Mela, sometimes called the mini Kumbh. It runs from Makar Sankranti in mid-January to Maha Shivratri, and the main snan days follow the same panchang logic as the Kumbh: Makar Sankranti, Paush Purnima, Mauni Amavasya (the biggest), Basant Panchami, Maghi Purnima and Maha Shivratri. Thousands of kalpvasis live the month on the sand in vowed austerity: one meal, cold snan daily, satsang. For a pilgrim who wants the Sangam experience without a once-in-years crowd, Magh Mela is the honest recommendation, and it is bookable every year.

• The snan: boats take you from the ghats to the confluence platform, where you bathe at the meeting line of the two visible rivers; you can see the Ganga's grey and the Yamuna's green meet.
• The rituals: sankalp with a tirth purohit, tarpan for ancestors, and the offerings your family tradition asks; our guide handles the sequence in your language.
• On the bank: the Bade Hanuman temple, where the deity reclines and the Ganga is said to touch his feet in flood years; Akshayavat inside the fort precinct; Anand Bhavan for the history-minded.
• The season: the Sangam is open every day of the year; winter mornings are the classic, monsoon changes the boats, and Magh is the peak.

Bathing at the Sangam is free, at Magh Mela and at every Kumbh; nobody official sells entry to the river. What is genuinely paid: the boat to the confluence, the purohit's dakshina for rituals, and camp or hotel stays. On main snan days, touts sell "special ghat passes" and "VIP snan slots" that do not exist; administration passes for vehicles and camps are issued institutionally, not sold at the ghat.
