Papmochan Ghat: the ghat of liberation from sins
Papmochan Ghat is one of the most meaningfully named of all the ghats of Ayodhya, for its very name declares its power: Papmochan, the liberation from sins, from paap, sin, and mochan, release. It is a sacred bathing ghat on the Saryu, near the main temple clusters of the holy city, that is revered above all for the purification of sins; and the tradition holds that to take the holy dip here, especially upon certain sacred lunar days, is to have washed away not the sins of this life alone but the accumulated sins of many lifetimes. For the pilgrim who comes to Ayodhya carrying the burdens of the past, Papmochan Ghat offers the promise of a clean and unburdened soul, ready to stand before the Lord.
The meaning of Papmochan: the release from sin
The name of this ghat rests on one of the deepest beliefs of our tradition: that the sacred rivers are divine mothers with the power to purify the soul, and that the Saryu of Ayodhya, revered in the Ramayana and the Skanda Purana and held to be as holy as the Ganga herself, is among the most powerful of all in washing away sin. A dip in her waters, taken with faith and a humble, repentant heart, is believed to cleanse the bather of even the gravest wrongs; and at Papmochan Ghat, the ghat set apart for this very grace, that cleansing is held to be at its most complete, destroying the sins of many lives, especially when the dip is taken on the auspicious tithis, the sacred lunar dates. This is why, from ancient times, the pilgrim's first act in Ayodhya has been the holy snan in the Saryu, the purification of the self before the worship of the Lord; and Papmochan Ghat is the ghat of that great unburdening.
The mochan ghats: unburdening the soul
Papmochan Ghat has a companion in meaning along the Saryu, for among the ghats of Ayodhya there is also the Rinmochan, or Loanmochan, Ghat, whose name means the release from debts. Together the two make a beautiful pair, the mochan ghats, the ghats of liberation: for as Papmochan frees the soul from the burden of its sins, so Rinmochan is held to free the devotee from the burden of debts, worldly and spiritual, the rin owed to the gods, the sages, and the ancestors. To bathe at these ghats is, in the deepest sense, to lay down one's burdens by the sacred river, to unburden the soul before the Lord; and this unburdening lies at the very heart of what a pilgrimage to the Saryu means.
The ritual snan
The great act at Papmochan Ghat is the ritual snan, the sacred bath, and it is beautiful to do it in the proper way. In the quiet of the early morning, before the sun is high, the pilgrim comes down to the steps, takes water in the cupped hands, and, with a sankalp, a solemn resolve and prayer, and the remembrance of the Lord, steps into the sacred Saryu and takes the dip, letting the holy water carry away the sins and burdens of the past. Many then offer water to the sun, a floating lamp to the river, and a gift in charity, before proceeding, purified, to the darshan of the temples; for the traditional and beautiful sequence of an Ayodhya pilgrimage is the holy snan first, and then the Lord. Our pandit can guide you through the snan and its sankalp if you wish.
The great unburdening, in my own words
By Rajeev Sharma, guide with Experience My India
I love to bring my pilgrims to Papmochan Ghat in the early morning, at dawn, before we go to the temples, because this is the ghat of the great unburdening. I tell them what its name means: Papmochan, the release from sins, and that to take the dip here, especially on the sacred days, is believed to wash away the sins of many lifetimes. I see people come with heavy hearts and step out of that cold, clean Saryu water lighter, unburdened, ready to stand before the Lord. It is a beautiful thing to witness.
I always teach my guests to do the snan properly, to make the sankalp, the prayer and resolve, before they dip, and to offer water to the sun and a lamp to the river after. And I tell them about the other mochan ghat, the Rinmochan, that frees one from debts, so they understand the beautiful idea of laying down all one's burdens, sins and debts alike, by the holy river. I always keep to the old sequence: the snan first, to purify the soul, and then the darshan of Ram. For a pilgrim carrying the weight of the past, this ghat of liberation is one of the most healing places in all of Ayodhya.
In more than forty years on the ghats, to see a burdened pilgrim rise unburdened from the Saryu here is among the most moving things I know.

- See the nearby Saryu aarti in the evening, and the companion mochan ghats.
