📌 Quick Answer

The Lucknow to Naimisharanya distance is about 90 km by the best road route, via NH 30 and the Sidhauli - Misrikh road, which takes around 2 hours 16 minutes by car. Two near-identical alternatives via NH 230 and NH 30 run about 91 to 92 km in a similar time. A direct train is limited, so most pilgrims travel by road from Lucknow, the nearest major city and airport. For pilgrims a private car is the most comfortable and flexible choice. To arrange a Lucknow to Naimisharanya trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Naimisharanya, which pilgrims also call Neemsar, is one of the most sacred and least crowded tirthas in all of Bharat. This is the holy forest where the sage Suta narrated the Puranas to eighty-eight thousand rishis, where Lord Vishnu's chakra marked the earth and where the goddess is worshipped as Lalita Devi, one of the Shakti Peethas. It lies a short, easy drive north-west of Lucknow, which makes the big city the natural gateway for most travellers.

This guide gives you the real Lucknow to Naimisharanya distance, the best route and the alternatives, the return routes to Lucknow and the train and taxi options, so you can reach this ancient forest-tirtha without any guesswork. I have travelled and arranged this quiet road for pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Pairing it with Ayodhya? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Naimisharanya, Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Naimisharanya is one of my favourite places to bring devotees, because it is the quietest and most ancient of them all, the very forest where the Puranas were first spoken aloud. Most of my guests reach it from Lucknow, flying into the city and driving across. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so I have made this gentle drive many times with families from the South. Let me walk you through all of it.

MDR 74C84.0 km2 hr 33 minShortest distance but slower; some traffic

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Lucknow to Naimisharanya by Train

Direct trains from Lucknow to Naimisharanya are limited, which is why most pilgrims travel by road. Naimisharanya has its own small station and some travellers reach it by rail via Sitapur or Balamau junction and continue by road. If you prefer the train, plan the connection carefully and book ahead, especially around Amavasya and the Navratri days when the tirtha is busy.

Lucknow to Naimisharanya by Air

There is no airport at Naimisharanya. The nearest is Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, about 90 km and two to two and a half hours away by road, with good connections from across India and the South. Most pilgrims fly into Lucknow and drive across, which is the easiest way to reach the tirtha.

By Bus and Shared Taxi

State and private buses run from Lucknow towards Sitapur and Misrikh and shared vehicles cover the last stretch to Naimisharanya. Buses are the most economical option, though slower and busier than a car. For a family or a group keeping a darshan schedule across the forest's spread-out kunds and temples, a private car remains the easiest choice and it lets you stop where you wish along the way.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • In a hurry, by car: take NH 30 through Sidhauli and Misrikh, about 90 km and 2 hours 16 minutes.
  • For the shortest distance: the MDR 74C route on the way back is about 84 km, though a little slower.
  • By train: plan a connection via Sitapur or Balamau to Naimisharanya station.
  • Flying in from afar: fly into Lucknow, then drive the two hours or so to Neemsar.
  • For pilgrims with family: a private car or taxi, door to darshan, is the most comfortable of all.

What to See When You Reach Naimisharanya

Naimisharanya's sacred spots are spread through the old forest-town of Neemsar, on the bank of the Gomti. A gentle first visit might take in:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Chakra TirthThe round holy kund where Vishnu's chakra is said to have fallen
2Lalita Devi TempleThe Shakti Peeth of the goddess, the heart of Naimisharanya
3Vyas GaddiWhere Vyas is said to have compiled and taught the Puranas
4Hanuman GarhiThe much-loved Hanuman shrine of Neemsar
5Dadhichi KundThe tirtha of Sage Dadhichi, who gave his bones for the gods
6Pandav Qila & Manu-Satrupa sthalThe old mound and the tapasthali of Manu and Satrupa

A representative first day of Naimisharanya; the sites are spread out, so a car and a local guide help greatly.

Best Time to Visit Naimisharanya

The forest-tirtha is open all year, but it is loveliest and the drive most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. The Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris bring great crowds to the Lalita Devi temple, Somvati Amavasya and Phalgun days draw pilgrims to the kunds and Guru Purnima is specially kept in the land of Vyas. Avoid the peak of summer; in the monsoon the forest is green and beautiful but the paths can be wet.

Practical Tips for the Visit

  • Start early; leave Lucknow in the morning so you reach Neemsar with the day ahead for the kunds and temples.
  • Trust live navigation; the three routes are close, so let the app or your driver pick the lightest on the day.
  • Keep a car for the sites; Chakra Tirth, Lalita Devi and the other spots are spread across the town.
  • Carry water and basics; Neemsar is a small, simple pilgrim town with limited facilities.
  • Dress modestly and tread gently; this is an ancient, quiet forest-tirtha, not a tourist spot.
  • Take a guide for the stories; the Puranic legends at each kund are what bring Naimisharanya alive.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest with you. Naimisharanya is a small, old pilgrim town, not a polished destination. The road from Lucknow is easy but ordinary, the sites are simple and spread out and facilities are basic compared with Ayodhya or Lucknow. But that very quietness is its gift: this is one of the most ancient tirthas in the land, the forest where the Puranas were born and it rewards those who come slowly and with shraddha. Start early, keep a car and let it unfold gently.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Naimisharanya, Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Bodhgaya. For the Lucknow to Naimisharanya trip we handle the whole thing: a clean car, a driver who knows the Sidhauli - Misrikh road and the spread-out kunds and a day planned around Chakra Tirth, Lalita Devi and Vyas Gaddi so you waste none of it. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the day are all taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Pair Naimisharanya with Ayodhya, not on its own. From Lucknow it is an easy half-day each way, so many of my guests do Neemsar as a quiet first day, bathe at Chakra Tirth and pray at Lalita Devi, then drive on to Ayodhya for the Ram Mandir and the Saryu. Begin at Chakra Tirth in the morning when the kund is still and the forest cool, sit a while at Vyas Gaddi and picture the Puranas being spoken aloud and you will feel why the rishis chose this forest above all others.
