📌 Quick Answer

The Ayodhya to Prayagraj distance is about 164 km by the fastest road route, via NH 330, which takes around 3 hours 59 minutes by car. An alternative via the Shivgarh road and NH 330 is about 175 km and a longer route via NH 330A is about 215 km. You can also take a train to Prayagraj Junction in roughly 3 to 5 hours or drive the newer Ganga Expressway stretch. For pilgrims a private car is the most comfortable and flexible choice and the trip is easily done in a day. To arrange an Ayodhya to Prayagraj Sangam trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The road from Ayodhya to Prayagraj joins the city of Lord Ram to the sacred Tirtharaj, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the unseen Saraswati. It is one of the most natural legs of a Uttar Pradesh pilgrimage: Ram Lalla's darshan at Ayodhya one day, a snan at the Triveni Sangam the next. Since the Ram Mandir opened and the Ganga Expressway came through, this route is busier and smoother than ever and most pilgrims cover it in a single easy half-day.

This guide gives you the real Ayodhya to Prayagraj distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Prayagraj to Ayodhya return and the train and flight options, so you can reach the Sangam without any guesswork. I have driven and arranged this road for pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling for a Sangam snan? See our Prayagraj Sangam snan package.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Kashi, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Joining Ayodhya to the Sangam is one of the trips I arrange most, because the two belong together, the birthplace of Ram and the king of all tirthas. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada and I have driven this road many times with families from the South making their first snan at the confluence. It is an easy, pleasant road, so let me walk you through all of it.

Ayodhya to Prayagraj by Road: The Three Routes

The drive from Ayodhya to Prayagraj can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 330164 km3 hr 59 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
Shivgarh Rd + NH 330175 km4 hr 37 minSome traffic, as usual
NH 330A215 km4 hr 33 minLonger but avoids the slowdown on NH 330

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: NH 330 is the shortest and usually the fastest at about 164 km. If NH 330 is slow, the NH 330A route is longer in kilometres but keeps you moving and the newer Ganga Expressway stretch is a smooth, open option on the Prayagraj side.

Prayagraj to Ayodhya: The Return Routes

Coming back, the picture is much the same, with the Ganga Expressway offering an alternative. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 330164 km4 hr 4 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
NH 731A + NH 330208 km5 hr 1 minAvoids the slowdown on NH 330
Ganga Expressway + NH 330A246 km4 hr 27 minLonger but a smooth expressway run; avoids the NH 330 slowdown

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Ayodhya to Prayagraj by Train

The train is a comfortable and cheap option on this route. Ayodhya Dham Junction connects to Prayagraj Junction with several services and the journey takes roughly 3 to 5 hours depending on the train. From Prayagraj Junction it is a short ride to the Triveni Sangam and the city's temples. During the Magh Mela and above all the Kumbh, trains to Prayagraj are extremely crowded and sell out weeks ahead, so book as early as you can.

Ayodhya to Prayagraj by Air

Both cities now have airports, Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International and Prayagraj's airport at Bamrauli, but a direct flight between them is not practical for such a short distance; the drive is quicker door to door. Some pilgrims fly into Ayodhya or Prayagraj from across India and drive the other leg. For the Ayodhya to Prayagraj hop itself, road or rail is the sensible way.

By Bus, Taxi and the Ganga Expressway

State and private buses run through the day between Ayodhya and Prayagraj, the most economical way to travel, though slower and busier than a car. A private taxi or cab is the easiest choice for a family keeping a darshan and snan schedule and your driver can use the newer Ganga Expressway stretch on the Prayagraj side for a smoother run when NH 330 is heavy.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • In a hurry, by car: take NH 330, the shortest and fastest at about 164 km and 3 hours 59 minutes.
  • If NH 330 is slow: the NH 330A route or the Ganga Expressway stretch keeps you moving, though longer.
  • On a budget: a daily train to Prayagraj Junction, around 3 to 5 hours, is cheap and comfortable.
  • Flying in from afar: land at Ayodhya or Prayagraj and drive the other leg.
  • For a one-day Sangam trip: a private car or taxi, door to snan, is the most comfortable of all.

What to See When You Reach Prayagraj

Once you arrive from Ayodhya, the Tirtharaj unfolds. The natural sequence of a visit runs:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Triveni SangamThe holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati, for snan
2Bade Hanuman MandirThe reclining Hanuman by the Sangam, a must before snan
3Akshayavat & the FortThe undying banyan inside the Allahabad Fort
4Mankameshwar TempleThe riverside Shiva temple on the Yamuna bank
5Anand BhawanThe Nehru family home, a landmark of modern India
6Bharadwaj AshramThe ancient ashram of Sage Bharadwaj in the old city

A representative first day of Prayagraj; plan the order around the Sangam boats, darshan hours and the season.

See Ayodhya Before You Leave

Before you drive out, give Ayodhya its due. Have darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, climb to Hanuman Garhi, see the golden Kanak Bhawan and keep an evening for the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi. Ram's city and the Sangam, seen together, make one of the fullest pilgrimages in Uttar Pradesh.

Best Time to Make the Journey

The road is open all year, but the drive and the darshan are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March, which is also the great season of the Sangam. Plan carefully around the Magh Mela and the Kumbh in January and February, when Prayagraj draws millions and every road, train and room is stretched; and around Ram Navami and Deepotsav in Ayodhya. Avoid the peak of summer and the heaviest monsoon days.

Practical Tips for the Drive

  • Start early; leave Ayodhya in the morning to reach Prayagraj with the day ahead for the Sangam snan.
  • Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
  • Plan around the Mela; during Magh Mela and Kumbh, roads, trains and rooms fill months ahead.
  • Do the reclining Hanuman first; Bade Hanuman darshan before the Sangam snan is the local custom.
  • Book trains ahead on festival dates; Kumbh, Ram Navami and weekends fill fast.
  • Hire a car with a local driver; he will know the live route, the Sangam access and the quiet hours.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest with you. The Ayodhya to Prayagraj road is easy, but it is not empty; since the Ram Mandir opened, both cities and the road between them are far busier and during the Magh Mela and the Kumbh, Prayagraj and every approach to it are overwhelmed. Road times shift with roadworks and the slowdown on NH 330, so treat the figures here as a close guide, not a promise. Start early, plan the Mela dates with care and joining Ayodhya to the Sangam will be one of the most rewarding journeys you make.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Kashi, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. Joining Ayodhya to the Sangam is a trip I know well: a clean car, a driver who knows the live route and the Sangam access and both ends planned around the darshan and the snan so you waste none of it. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the days are all taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do this journey in the right rhythm. Give the evening to Ayodhya, the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi and a calm Ram Mandir darshan at dawn, then drive out on NH 330 and reach Prayagraj by afternoon. Keep the next morning for the Sangam, when the river light is soft: the reclining Bade Hanuman first, then a boat out to the confluence for your snan. Ram's city and the Tirtharaj, joined over two unhurried days, is a pilgrimage you will remember for life.
