📌 Quick Answer

The Varanasi to Ayodhya distance is about 219 km by the fastest road route, via NH731 and NH 330, which takes around 4 hours 33 minutes by car. An alternative via NH 135A runs about 223 km in a little over 5 hours and a longer expressway route via NH 28 and the Purvanchal Expressway is about 268 km. You can also take a train to Ayodhya Dham Junction or fly between the two cities' airports. For pilgrims a private car is the most comfortable and flexible choice and the whole trip is easily done in a day. To arrange a Varanasi to Ayodhya trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The road from Varanasi to Ayodhya joins the two great hearts of Hindu faith, the city of Shiva and the city of Ram, Kashi and the birthplace of Shri Ram. Since the Ram Mandir opened, this has become one of the most travelled pilgrim routes in Uttar Pradesh and the good news is that it is an easy half-day journey, not a hard one. Most pilgrims do it as a single drive, Ganga Aarti one evening and Ram Lalla's darshan the next morning.

This guide gives you the real Varanasi to Ayodhya distance, the fastest route and the alternatives, the return routes to Varanasi and the train and flight options, so you can join Kashi and Ayodhya without any guesswork. I am a Kashi man myself and have driven and arranged this road for pilgrims countless times; here is exactly how it works. Want it arranged end to end? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Kashi is my home and joining it to Ayodhya is the journey I arrange most often, because the two cities belong together, Shiva and Ram, the ghats of the Ganga and the ghats of the Saryu. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada and I have driven this road many times with families from the South making their first pilgrimage to both. It is an easy, pleasant road, so let me walk you through all of it.

Varanasi to Ayodhya by Road: The Three Routes

The drive from Varanasi to Ayodhya can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH731 + NH 330219 km4 hr 33 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
NH 135A223 km5 hr 25 minSome traffic, as usual
NH 28 + Purvanchal Expressway268 km5 hr 12 minLonger but a smoother expressway run

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: NH731 with NH 330 is the shortest and usually the fastest. If you prefer an open, easy drive and do not mind the extra distance, the Purvanchal Expressway route via NH 28 is smooth, though longer.

Ayodhya to Varanasi: The Return Routes

Coming back, the picture is much the same. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 330 + NH731218 km4 hr 26 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
NH 330 + NH731 + NH 31221 km4 hr 47 minA steady alternative
NH 28237 km5 hr 16 minSome traffic, as usual

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Varanasi to Ayodhya by Train

The train is a comfortable and cheap option on this route. Varanasi is a major junction and daily trains run to Ayodhya Dham Junction, the renamed Ayodhya station, taking roughly 4 to 6 hours depending on the service. From the station it is a short ride to Ram Ki Paidi and the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. On festival dates such as Ram Navami and Deepotsav the trains fill fast, so book ahead.

Varanasi to Ayodhya by Air

Both cities now have airports, Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International at Babatpur and Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International, but a direct flight between them is not practical for such a short distance; the drive is quicker door to door. What some pilgrims do is fly into Varanasi from across India, see Kashi and drive on to Ayodhya. For the Varanasi to Ayodhya leg itself, road or rail is the sensible way.

By Bus and Shared Taxi

State and private buses run through the day between Varanasi and Ayodhya and they are the most economical way to travel, though slower and busier than a car. Shared taxis also ply the route. For a family keeping a darshan schedule across both cities, a private car remains the easiest choice and it lets you stop where you wish along the way.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • In a hurry, by car: take NH731 with NH 330, the shortest and fastest at about 219 km and 4 hours 33 minutes.
  • For a smooth drive: the Purvanchal Expressway route via NH 28 is longer but an easy, open run.
  • On a budget: a daily train to Ayodhya Dham Junction, around 4 to 6 hours, is cheap and comfortable.
  • Flying in from afar: land at Varanasi, see Kashi and drive on to Ayodhya.
  • For a one-day pilgrimage: a private car or taxi, door to darshan, is the most comfortable of all.

What to See When You Reach Ayodhya

Once you arrive from Kashi, a full day of Ayodhya is waiting. The natural sequence runs:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir)The birthplace of Lord Ram, the heart of any visit
2Hanuman GarhiThe hilltop fort-temple of Hanuman, guardian of the city
3Kanak BhawanThe golden palace-temple gifted to Sita
4Nageshwarnath TempleThe ancient Shiva temple near the river, founded by Kush
5Ram Ki PaidiThe ghats of the Saryu for a bath and the evening aarti
6Guptar GhatWhere Ram is said to have left the world; a sunset close

A representative full day of Ayodhya; plan the order around temple darshan hours and the time of the Saryu Aarti.

See Kashi Before You Leave

Before you drive out, give Varanasi its due. See the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, stand for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, take a dawn Ganga boat ride past the ghats and visit Sarnath where the Buddha first taught. Kashi and Ayodhya seen together are the fullest of pilgrimages.

Best Time to Make the Journey

The road is open all year, but the drive and the darshan in both cities are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. Plan around the great festivals, when crowds swell: Deepotsav and Ram Navami in Ayodhya and Dev Deepawali and Mahashivratri in Kashi. For a full plan of the holy city at the far end, see our guide to the best time to visit Ayodhya.

Practical Tips for the Drive

  • Start early; leave Varanasi in the morning to reach Ayodhya with the day ahead for darshan.
  • Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
  • The two aartis; the Ganga Aarti in Kashi and the Saryu Aarti in Ayodhya are the highlights at each end.
  • Book trains ahead on festival dates; Ram Navami, Deepotsav and weekends fill fast.
  • Allow for darshan queues; keep time for security and shoe-and-mobile deposit at the Ram Mandir.
  • Hire a car with a local driver; he will know the live route, the parking and the quiet hours.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest with you. The Varanasi to Ayodhya road is easy, but it is not empty; since the Ram Mandir opened, both cities and the road between them are far busier than before and on festival days the last stretch into Ayodhya and the parking near the temples can be slow. Road times shift with roadworks, so treat the figures here as a close guide, not a promise. Start early, keep your plans flexible and joining Kashi to Ayodhya will be one of the most rewarding pilgrimages you make.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. Joining Kashi to Ayodhya is the trip I know best: a clean car, a driver who knows the live route and the parking and both cities planned around the darshan and the two aartis so you waste none of it. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the days are all taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do this journey in the right rhythm, not in a rush. Give the first evening to Kashi, the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh and a quiet Vishwanath darshan at dawn with a boat ride on the river. Then drive out mid-morning on NH731, reach Ayodhya by afternoon and keep that evening for the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi, with the Ram Mandir in the calm of the next morning. Shiva's city and Ram's city, joined over two unhurried days, is the fullest pilgrimage in all of Uttar Pradesh.
