A Varanasi-based loop to the Sangam and Ayodhya is a lot of ground in three days, and it turns almost entirely on getting Day 1 right. Most listings skip the numbers; here they are, because they decide whether the trip feels smooth or rushed.
Day 1 is the demanding one. From Varanasi it is about 120 km to Prayagraj, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours, then the Sangam, and then about 170 km on to Ayodhya, around 4 hours via NH-330 - close to 290 km of driving plus a boat ride and two stops in a single day. That is entirely doable, but only with an early start and a Sangam that does not eat the afternoon. This is why Experience My India leaves Varanasi at 7:00 AM and pre-arranges the Sangam boat at a fixed fare, so there is no bargaining on the ghat and you are back on the road to Ayodhya by mid-afternoon, reaching your hotel in the evening rather than late at night.
Day 3 has the other long leg: Ayodhya back to Varanasi is about 200 km, 4.5 to 5 hours via NH-731. We keep the Day-3 morning light - a stroll on the Saryu, a last darshan - precisely because the drive that follows is the longest single stretch of the trip, and we time the 10:00 AM checkout so you reach Varanasi comfortably for an onward train or flight.
Two honest points that save the day. At the Sangam the ghat is not the confluence - a boat is the only way to the actual dip, and fares are not fixed (shared about Rs 100-200 per person), so a pre-arranged authorised boat is what keeps Day 1 on schedule. And at the Ram Mandir, general darshan is free, phones and leather are banned inside, and the Sugam Darshan e-pass only speeds the queue - so no one should ever charge you for entry. Get the early start, the boat and the pass right, and the loop runs without a wasted hour.
