For most pilgrims the road to Ayodhya begins at Lucknow. It is the big city and the big airport of the region and from here the holy town of Lord Ram is only a short, easy drive to the east. Since the Ram Mandir opened, this is one of the most travelled stretches in Uttar Pradesh and the good news is that it is a comfortable half-day journey on fast national highways, not a hard slog.
This guide gives you the real Lucknow to Ayodhya distance, the fastest route and the alternatives, the return routes to Lucknow and the train, flight and taxi options, so you can plan your darshan without any guesswork. I have driven and arranged this road for pilgrims countless times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling onward for darshan? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. The Lucknow road is the one most of my guests arrive on, flying into Lucknow and driving across to Ram's city for darshan. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so I have made this drive many times with families from the South who are seeing Ayodhya for the first time. It is an easy, pleasant road, but the route that is fastest changes with the traffic and the roadworks, so let me walk you through all of it.

Lucknow to Ayodhya by Road: The Three Routes
The drive east from Lucknow to Ayodhya can be done three sensible ways. All of them currently avoid the road closures on Mahatma Gandhi Marg. Here is how they compare:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| NH 27 | 137 km | 2 hr 46 min | Fastest route now; avoids closures on Mahatma Gandhi Marg |
| Udauli - Sirauli Gauspur Rd + NH 27 | 155 km | 3 hr 26 min | Avoids closures on Mahatma Gandhi Marg |
| Purvanchal Expy + NH 330A | 156 km | 2 hr 49 min | Smooth expressway run; avoids closures on Mahatma Gandhi Marg |
Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.
In short: NH 27 is both the shortest and usually the fastest. If NH 27 is heavy, the Purvanchal Expressway with NH 330A is almost as quick and a very smooth drive, just a little longer in distance.
Ayodhya to Lucknow: The Return Routes
Coming back, the picture flips a little and the expressway route is often the quickest. The main return options are:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| NH 330A + Purvanchal Expy | 155 km | 2 hr 39 min | Fastest route now; avoids closures |
| NH 27 + Basti - Lucknow Rd | 141 km | 3 hr 2 min | Avoids closures |
| Basti - Lucknow Rd | 136 km | 2 hr 42 min | Shortest distance; avoids closures |
Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.
Lucknow to Ayodhya by Train
The train is a comfortable and cheap option. Lucknow is a major junction and a number of daily trains run east to Ayodhya Dham Junction (the renamed Ayodhya station), taking roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on the service. Faizabad, now Ayodhya Cantt, is the other nearby railhead. From the station it is a short auto or taxi ride to Ram Ki Paidi and the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. Book ahead on festival dates, when trains fill fast.
Lucknow to Ayodhya by Air
Both cities now have airports, but a Lucknow to Ayodhya flight is not a practical option for such a short distance; the drive is quicker door to door. What many pilgrims do instead is fly into Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport from across India and the South, then drive the two to three hours across to Ayodhya. If you prefer to land closer, Ayodhya's own Maharishi Valmiki International Airport is handling a growing number of direct flights, so check what flies to Ayodhya Dham before you route through Lucknow.
By Bus and Shared Taxi
State and private buses run through the day between Lucknow and Ayodhya and they are the most economical way to travel, though slower and busier than a car. Shared taxis and cabs also ply the route. For a family or a group carrying luggage and keeping a darshan schedule, a private car remains the easiest choice and it lets you stop where you wish along the way.
Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?
- In a hurry, by car: take NH 27, the shortest and usually fastest road at about 137 km and 2 hours 46 minutes.
- For a smooth drive: the Purvanchal Expressway with NH 330A is almost as quick and an easy, open run.
- On a budget: a daily train to Ayodhya Dham Junction, around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, is cheap and comfortable.
- Flying in from afar: land at Lucknow and drive across or check for a direct flight to Ayodhya Dham.
- For pilgrims with family: a private car or taxi, door to darshan, is the most comfortable of all.
What to See When You Reach Ayodhya
Once you arrive, a full day of Ayodhya is waiting. The natural sequence of the holy city runs:
| Sr.N. | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir) | The birthplace of Lord Ram, the heart of any visit |
| 2 | Hanuman Garhi | The hilltop fort-temple of Hanuman, guardian of the city |
| 3 | Kanak Bhawan | The golden palace-temple gifted to Sita, in the old city |
| 4 | Nageshwarnath Temple | The ancient Shiva temple near the river, founded by Kush |
| 5 | Ram Ki Paidi | The ghats of the Saryu for a bath and the evening aarti |
| 6 | Guptar Ghat | Where Ram is said to have left the world; a sunset close |
A representative full day of Ayodhya; plan the order around temple darshan hours and the time of the Saryu Aarti.
Best Time to Make the Journey
The road is open all year, but the drive and the darshan are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. Avoid the peak of summer and the heaviest monsoon days and at the great festivals of Ram Navami and Deepotsav expect far heavier traffic on this road and in the city, so leave early and allow extra time. For a full season-by-season plan, see our guide to the best time to visit Ayodhya.
Practical Tips for the Drive
- Start early; leave Lucknow in the morning to reach Ayodhya with the day ahead for darshan.
- Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with roadworks, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
- Carry water and snacks; there are dhabas on the way, but it is good to be stocked for a family drive.
- Book trains ahead on festival dates; Ram Navami, Deepotsav and weekends fill fast.
- Keep darshan time in mind; allow for security queues and shoe-and-mobile deposit at the Ram Mandir.
- Hire a car with a local driver; he will know the live route, the parking and the quiet hours.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. The Lucknow to Ayodhya road is easy, but it is not empty; since the Ram Mandir opened, traffic has grown and on festival days and weekends the last stretch into Ayodhya and the parking near the temples can be slow and crowded. Road times shift with roadworks, so treat the figures here as a close guide, not a promise. Leave early, keep your plans flexible and the journey itself is a smooth and easy one.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For the Lucknow to Ayodhya trip we handle the whole thing: a clean car, a driver who knows the live route and the parking and a day of Ayodhya planned around the darshan hours so you waste none of it. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the day are all taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Fly into Lucknow in the morning and drive straight across on NH 27 and you can be at Hanuman Garhi by early afternoon with the whole of Ayodhya still ahead of you. Keep the first evening for the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi, rest the night in Ayodhya and give the Ram Mandir the calm of the next morning. Done this way, a single easy drive from Lucknow turns into a full, unhurried darshan, not a rushed day trip. |
