Just outside my city of Kashi, a short drive to the north-east, lies Sarnath, the quiet deer park where the Buddha gave his first sermon and set the wheel of dharma turning. It is one of the four holiest places in Buddhism and because it is so close to Varanasi, almost every visitor to Kashi can see it in half a day. The distance is small, the road is easy and the contrast is wonderful: from the intensity of the Ganga ghats to the calm of Sarnath's stupas and gardens.
This guide gives you the real Varanasi to Sarnath distance by road, the quickest route and the alternatives, the Sarnath to Varanasi return and how to get there by taxi, auto or train, so you can plan your visit without any guesswork. I have taken countless guests on this short, lovely trip; here is exactly how it works. Want it arranged with a guide? See our 1-day Varanasi City and Sarnath tour.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Sarnath is my city's gentle neighbour and I love taking guests there after the intensity of the ghats, because the two could not be more different. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada and I have walked the stupas and the museum many times with families and with Buddhist pilgrims from the South and beyond. It is the easiest trip from Kashi, so let me show you how to do it well.

Varanasi to Sarnath by Road: The Three Routes
The short drive from Varanasi to Sarnath can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| NH 31 | 10.8 km | 29 min | Fastest route now due to traffic conditions |
| Madan Mohan Malviya Rd | 10.8 km | 29 min | Some traffic, as usual |

Coming back, the picture is much the same over this short distance. The main return routes are:

| NH 31 | 11.4 km | 32 min | Some traffic, as usual |

Return times also move with traffic; your driver or auto will pick the best live route.
Varanasi to Sarnath by Taxi, Auto and Cab
For such a short trip, a taxi, cab or auto-rickshaw is the easiest way to reach Sarnath and the one most visitors use. From the ghats or from Varanasi Cantt railway station it is about a 30-minute ride. Autos are cheapest and easy to find; a booked cab or a car with a driver is more comfortable, especially in the heat or with family and lets you keep it waiting while you walk the stupas and the museum. Agree the fare or use a meter before you set off.
Varanasi to Sarnath by Train and Bus
Sarnath has its own small railway station and a few local trains connect it with Varanasi, though the timings are limited and most visitors find a taxi or auto far more convenient for such a short hop. City buses and shared autos also run towards Sarnath from parts of Varanasi. For a relaxed half-day with darshan and the museum, a private car or a booked auto remains the easiest choice.
What to See When You Reach Sarnath
Sarnath is small and walkable, its monuments set among lawns and old ruins. A gentle visit takes in:
| Order | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Dhamek Stupa | The great stupa marking where the Buddha first taught |
| 2 | Mulagandha Kuti Vihar | The modern temple with its famous frescoes and bell |
| 3 | Sarnath Archaeological Museum | Home to the Lion Capital of Ashoka, India's emblem |
| 4 | Deer Park & the Ashoka Pillar | The gardens and the stump of Ashoka's great pillar |
| 5 | Chaukhandi Stupa | The mound where the Buddha met his first disciples |
| 6 | Thai Temple & monasteries | The temples built by Buddhist nations around Sarnath |
A representative half-day of Sarnath; the museum keeps its own hours and is closed on Fridays, so confirm before you go.
See Kashi As Well
Sarnath is best paired with a full day of Varanasi. See the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, stand for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, take a dawn Ganga boat ride along the ghats of Varanasi and then slip out to Sarnath for the calm of the stupas. Kashi and Sarnath together, Shiva and the Buddha, make a complete and moving day.
Best Time to Visit Sarnath
Sarnath can be visited all year, but the cool months from October to March are the most pleasant for walking the gardens and the stupas and it fills with Buddhist pilgrims through the winter, above all around Buddha Purnima. Mornings are calm and good for the museum; late afternoon light is lovely on the Dhamek Stupa. For a full plan of the season, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
- Keep your cab or auto waiting; it saves time over finding another ride back from Sarnath.
- Check museum hours; the Archaeological Museum, home to the Lion Capital, is closed on Fridays.
- Go in the morning or late afternoon; the midday heat is strong and the light is best at the end of the day.
- Dress modestly and keep quiet; Sarnath is a living place of Buddhist worship and meditation.
- Allow two to three hours; enough for the stupa, the museum and a monastery or two.
- Pair it with Kashi; a half-day at Sarnath fits perfectly with a full day of Varanasi.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. Sarnath is close and easy, but it is a quiet, reflective place, not a grand spectacle like the Ganga ghats; its power is in its stillness and its history, not in size. The approach roads and the area around the Cantt station can be busy and autos may quote high fares to visitors, so agree the price first. Come in the right spirit, with time to sit a while in the deer park and Sarnath gives you one of the most peaceful experiences near Kashi.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For a Varanasi and Sarnath visit we arrange a clean car and driver, a knowledgeable guide for the stupas and the museum and a day that pairs Sarnath with the best of Kashi. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian and Buddhist pilgrims are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the ride, the darshan and the day are all taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do Sarnath in the late afternoon, not the middle of the day. Reach the deer park by about four, when the heat has eased and the low sun turns the Dhamek Stupa golden; walk the gardens, see the Lion Capital in the museum and sit a while where the Buddha first spoke. Then drive the half hour back to Kashi in time for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh. Stillness at Sarnath, then the river of lamps at the ghats, is the most beautiful way to end a day in my city. |
