Gaya in Bihar is one of the most important pilgrimage cities in all of Bharat. For Hindus it is the great city of moksha, where pind daan at the Vishnupad temple and the Falgu river is believed to free the ancestors and just beside it lies Bodhgaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment. From Lucknow, Gaya lies far to the east, a long journey across the plains, so choosing the right way to travel matters more here than on a short hop.
This guide gives you the real Lucknow to Gaya distance, the fastest road route and the alternatives, the return routes to Lucknow and the all-important train and flight options, so you can reach the city of moksha without any guesswork. I have arranged this journey for pind daan and Buddhist pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling for the rituals? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Gaya, Bodhgaya, Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Naimisharanya for more than forty years. Gaya is where families come to perform pind daan for their ancestors, one of the most tender duties in our dharma and I have walked many of them through it. The Lucknow road is long, so I usually advise the train or a flight, with our car and guide waiting in Gaya. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families, who come to Gaya in great numbers, are looked after in their own tongue. Let me explain all your options.

Lucknow to Gaya by Road: The Three Routes
If you do choose to drive, the journey can be done three ways, though all are long. Here is how they compare:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| Purvanchal Expressway + NH 120 | 541 km | 9 hr 49 min | Fastest route now due to traffic conditions |
| NH 19 | 578 km | 10 hr 26 min | A steady alternative |
| NH731 | 571 km | 12 hr 36 min | Some traffic, as usual; slower |
Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.
In short: the Purvanchal Expressway is by far the best road, saving hours over the older highways. Even so, at nearly ten hours it is a hard one-day drive, which is why most pilgrims take the train or fly.
Gaya to Lucknow: The Return Routes
Coming back, the expressway is again the quickest. The main return routes are:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| Purvanchal Expressway | 591 km | 9 hr 44 min | Fastest route now due to traffic conditions |
| NH 19 + Purvanchal Expressway | 592 km | 10 hr 29 min | Avoids road closures on Rewa Rd |
| NH731 | 572 km | 12 hr 9 min | Avoids road closures on Rewa Rd; slower |
Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.
Lucknow to Gaya by Train
For this journey the train is usually the sensible choice. Gaya Junction is a major station on the main Delhi - Howrah line and a number of daily trains connect it with Lucknow, taking roughly 8 to 12 hours depending on the service, many of them running overnight so you reach Gaya rested in the morning. From the station it is a short ride to the Vishnupad temple and the Falgu ghats and about 13 km to Bodhgaya. During Pitru Paksha, the great fortnight of pind daan, trains are extremely crowded and sell out weeks ahead, so book as early as you can.
Lucknow to Gaya by Air
Gaya has its own airport, Gaya International, which handles domestic and seasonal Buddhist-pilgrim flights, though the schedule is limited. The larger and better-connected option is Patna, about 100 km and two and a half to three hours away by road. Many pilgrims fly into Gaya or Patna and keep a car and guide waiting on the ground, which avoids the long drive from Lucknow altogether.
By Bus and Shared Taxi
Long-distance buses connect Lucknow and the Bihar towns with Gaya and they are economical, but over such a distance they are slow and tiring. For a family performing pind daan, with elders and a schedule of rituals, a private car on the ground in Gaya, booked with a train or flight for the long leg, is far more comfortable than a bus the whole way.
Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?
- The sensible choice: take an overnight train to Gaya Junction, roughly 8 to 12 hours and arrive rested.
- Fastest overall: fly into Gaya or Patna and keep a car and guide waiting on the ground.
- If you must drive: take the Purvanchal Expressway, about 541 km and 9 hours 49 minutes and share the driving.
- For pind daan with elders: train or flight for the long leg, a private car in Gaya for the rituals.
- Avoid: a bus the whole way or the slower NH731 road, unless you have no alternative.
What to See When You Reach Gaya
Gaya and neighbouring Bodhgaya hold some of the holiest sites in India, for both Hindus and Buddhists. A visit usually takes in:
| Order | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Vishnupad Temple | The great temple over Vishnu's footprint, heart of the pind daan |
| 2 | Falgu river ghats | Where the shraddh and pind daan rituals are performed |
| 3 | Mangla Gauri Temple | The hilltop Shakti Peeth of the goddess |
| 4 | Bodhgaya & Mahabodhi Temple | Where the Buddha attained enlightenment, about 13 km away |
| 5 | Pretshila & Ramshila Hills | The hill shrines central to the pind daan circuit |
| 6 | Brahmayoni Hill | The old hill tirtha with its long climb and views |
A representative visit to Gaya and Bodhgaya; pind daan is performed with a priest, so plan the ritual order with your guide.
Best Time to Visit Gaya
Gaya can be visited all year, but the cool months from October to March are the most comfortable for the rituals and for Bodhgaya, which fills with Buddhist pilgrims through the winter. The single most important time is Pitru Paksha, the fortnight of the ancestors, usually in September or early October, when the Gaya Shraddh mela draws enormous crowds for pind daan; it is the most powerful time for the ritual but by far the busiest. Avoid the peak of summer and expect heavy monsoon in the rainy months.
Practical Tips for the Journey
- Prefer the train or a flight; the Lucknow drive is nearly ten hours, so save your energy for the rituals.
- Book far ahead for Pitru Paksha; trains, rooms and priests are all stretched during the shraddh fortnight.
- Arrange your pandit in advance; pind daan is done with a qualified priest at set spots; a guide helps you avoid touts.
- Keep a car in Gaya; the sites and Bodhgaya are spread out, not walkable together.
- Carry essentials for elders; the rituals involve long days; water, shade and rest matter.
- Pair Gaya with Bodhgaya; it is only 13 km and the two together make a complete trip.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. Lucknow to Gaya is a genuinely long journey and driving it in one day is tiring and not what I recommend; the train or a flight is almost always the better choice. Gaya during Pitru Paksha is overwhelmed with pilgrims and pind daan involves touts and pressure if you arrive unprepared, so it pays to plan the priest and the ritual order in advance. Come with patience and a good guide and Gaya gives you one of the most meaningful journeys in all of Hindu dharma.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Gaya, Bodhgaya, Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Naimisharanya. For the Lucknow to Gaya trip we arrange the whole thing: train or flight for the long leg, a clean car and driver waiting in Gaya, a trusted pandit for the pind daan and a plan that pairs the Vishnupad temple with Bodhgaya. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families, who come to Gaya in great numbers, are cared for in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the travel, the rituals and the days are all taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do Gaya as part of the great Kashi-Gaya journey, the way it has been done for centuries. Take an overnight train from Lucknow, perform pind daan at the Vishnupad temple and the Falgu in the calm of the morning with a trusted pandit, give the afternoon to Bodhgaya and the Mahabodhi temple just 13 km away and carry on to Kashi to complete the rites at the Ganga. Planned this way, with the long leg on a train and a car waiting on the ground, the journey becomes a peaceful, complete tirtha rather than a tiring drive. |
