ॐSankasht Har Madhav timings and aarti

The temple keeps a split day, open from 6:00 AM to noon and again from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, closed through the afternoon for the rest of the deity. Its aartis are the morning aarti, from 6:30 to 7:00 AM, after the cleaning and the adornment of the deity, and the evening aarti, from about 6:30 to 7:15 PM, by the sunset. Entry is strictly free, with no ticket and no VIP line; all stand in one queue. The best time is the morning, from about 6:00 to 11:00 AM, when it is calm and the rituals can be done in peace; and for a crowd-free darshan, come on a weekday morning right as the gates open at 6:00 AM.

ॐSankasht Har Madhav Temple: the remover of distress

As Kashi is the Shiv Nagari, the city of Shiva, so Prayag is the Vishnu Nagari, the city of Vishnu, guarded on every side by the twelve Madhavs, the twelve forms of the Lord. And among them, one of the most comforting, is Sankasht Har Madhav, the Vishnu worshipped as the Destroyer of All Distress; his ancient shrine stands beneath the sacred Sandhya Vat, a great banyan tree upon the eastern bank of the Ganga, at Jhunsi across the river. It is a place of a deep and quiet consolation, beneath the shade of a holy tree by the flowing river; and it is a cherished stop upon the round of the twelve guardians of Prayag.

ॐSankasht Har: the destroyer of all distress and obstacles

The name of this Madhav is a name of comfort, and it tells all his grace. Sankasht means distress, trouble, difficulty, suffering, the obstacles and sorrows and burdens that weigh upon the human heart; and Har means to destroy, to remove, to take away. So Sankasht Har means the Destroyer, the Remover, of all distress and obstacles; and Sankasht Har Madhav is the Vishnu who takes away every trouble and every difficulty and every sorrow of his devotees, the reliever of distress, the ender of suffering, the lifter of burdens. To this Lord, then, the troubled and the suffering and the heavy-laden come, to lay down at his feet the cares that press upon them, and to find relief, and consolation, and peace; for it is his very name and nature to take those burdens away. There are few graces sweeter than a Lord who is the destroyer of distress; and here, at Sankasht Har Madhav, that grace is his gift.

ॐThe Sandhya Vat: the second immortal banyan

The setting of Sankasht Har Madhav is itself of a great and beautiful holiness, for the Lord stands beneath the sacred Sandhya Vat, the banyan of the evening, upon the eastern bank of the Ganga. And the Sandhya Vat is no ordinary tree, but a great and deathless banyan, whose glory, the old Prayag Mahatmya tells us, is no less than that of the immortal Akshayavat itself; so that here, on the eastern shore of Prayag, stands a second sacred, undying banyan, worshipped through the long ages by the yogis and the sages and the holy souls, even as the great Akshayavat is worshipped on the western shore within the Fort. So the two shores of the holy city have each their sacred, immortal banyan and their banyan-Lord: as the Adi Vat Madhav abides beneath the Akshayavat in the west, so the Sankasht Har Madhav abides beneath the Sandhya Vat in the east; a beautiful symmetry of the deathless trees and their Vishnus. And near this holy spot flows the Hamsa Tirtha, the tirtha of the swan, that bird which is the very sign of the pure and discerning soul.

ॐJhunsi and the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama

Sankasht Har Madhav stands upon ground of the deepest antiquity, for Jhunsi, across the Ganga on the eastern side, is the ancient Pratishthanpur, one of the oldest inhabited places in all of India, the storied capital of the great King Pururavas and the kings of the lunar dynasty, and the setting of the immortal love of Pururavas and the nymph Urvashi. And Sankasht Har Madhav is one of the great company of the twelve Madhavs, and a station upon the Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, the sacred circuit of all twelve, which the pilgrims of Prayag undertake for the highest merit; for it is held that the full fruit of the Sangam bath is realised only upon the completion of the round of the twelve guardians, and that to walk it is a merit equal to encircling the whole cosmos.

ॐThe Lord who lifts every burden, in my own words

I love taking my pilgrims across the river to Sankasht Har Madhav, especially those who are carrying some trouble or grief, because the very name of this Lord is such a comfort. I explain that Sankasht Har means the one who destroys all distress and obstacles, so this is the Vishnu who takes away our burdens; and I tell them they can sit here, beneath the holy tree, by the river, and lay down whatever weighs on their heart, and find peace. People often feel a real relief here.

And I love to tell them the beautiful thing about the tree, that this Sandhya Vat is a second immortal banyan, our old books say no less holy than the great Akshayavat in the Fort; so we have two deathless banyans, one on each shore, and a Madhav beneath each, our Adi Vat Madhav in the west and this Sankasht Har Madhav in the east. And I tell them where they stand, in ancient Jhunsi, the old Pratishthanpur of King Pururavas. I fit it into the full Dwadash Madhav Parikrama, and we take the lovely morning boat across from the Sangam. A deeply comforting, ancient, beautiful place, and I love to share it, above all with those who need it.

• Remove footwear and be reverent; offer Tulsi and yellow flowers in the Vaishnava custom.
• Treat the sacred Sandhya Vat with respect; do not harm the holy tree.
• Sit quietly to chant beneath the tree, and be considerate of other devotees.
• Mind the river and the boats if you cross by water, and keep the place clean.
