📌 Quick Answer

The Vrindavan to Ayodhya distance is about 557 km by the fastest road route, via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, taking around 8 hours by car. A route via the Agra-Lucknow Expressway and NH 27 is slightly shorter at about 549 km, while the plain NH 34 route is longer and much slower at nearly 11 hours. Because it is a long drive, many pilgrims break the journey at Lucknow, take a train or fly part of the way. For comfort a private car with a driver is ideal. To arrange a Vrindavan to Ayodhya trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The road from Vrindavan to Ayodhya joins the two great homes of Vishnu on earth: Braj, the land of Krishna's childhood and Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram. Pilgrims who have drunk in the ras of Vrindavan often long to stand before Ram Lalla as well and since the Ram Mandir opened, more and more make the journey across Uttar Pradesh. It is a long drive, most of the day on the expressways, but the new roads have made it far smoother than it once was.

This guide gives you the real Vrindavan to Ayodhya distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Ayodhya to Vrindavan return and the train and flight options, so you can plan this long pilgrimage without any guesswork. I have arranged this journey for pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling onward for darshan? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Joining Krishna's Braj to Ram's Ayodhya is one of the most beautiful pilgrimages in the land, the two avatars of Vishnu in one journey and families from Vrindavan ask me for it often. It is a long road, so I usually advise breaking it at Lucknow or taking a train for part of the way, with our car on the ground in Ayodhya. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. Let me explain all your options.

Vrindavan to Ayodhya by Road: The Three Routes

The long drive from Vrindavan to Ayodhya can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
Agra-Lucknow Expressway557 km8 hr 10 minFastest route, the usual traffic
Agra-Lucknow Expressway + NH 27549 km8 hr 16 minShortest distance; a few minutes slower

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: the Agra-Lucknow Expressway is by far the best road, a smooth, open run of about 8 hours. The route adding NH 27 is a touch shorter and almost as quick, while the NH 34 route is slow and best avoided.

Ayodhya to Vrindavan: The Return Routes

Coming back, the expressway is again the quickest. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
Agra-Lucknow Expressway557 km8 hr 7 minFastest route, the usual traffic
NH 27 + Agra-Lucknow Expressway + Yamuna Expressway549 km8 hr 26 minShortest distance; a steady alternative
NH 27 + Agra-Lucknow Expressway562 km10 hr 15 minLonger and much slower

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Vrindavan to Ayodhya by Train

Over such a distance the train is a comfortable alternative to driving. The nearest big railhead to Vrindavan is Mathura Junction, a major station, from where trains connect to Ayodhya Dham Junction, usually via Lucknow or Kanpur, taking most of a day with the journey. Many overnight services let you travel while you sleep and arrive rested. From Ayodhya Dham Junction it is a short ride to Ram Ki Paidi and the Ram Mandir. Book well ahead, especially around Ram Navami and Deepotsav.

Vrindavan to Ayodhya by Air

For this long trip, flying can save time. Ayodhya has its own airport, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham and the nearest big airports to Vrindavan are Delhi and Agra. Some pilgrims fly from Delhi into Ayodhya or Lucknow, then drive the last stretch, which avoids the full eight-hour road journey. Check the current flights, as the Ayodhya schedule is still growing.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • By car, if you prefer: take the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, the fastest at about 557 km and 8 hours.
  • For the shortest road: the Agra-Lucknow Expressway with NH 27, about 549 km.
  • To break the drive: stop at Lucknow, roughly two-thirds of the way and rest the night.
  • By train: from Mathura Junction to Ayodhya, ideally an overnight service.
  • Flying in: from Delhi into Ayodhya or Lucknow, then a short drive.

What to See When You Reach Ayodhya

Once you arrive from Braj, a full day of Ayodhya is waiting. The natural sequence runs:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir)The birthplace of Lord Ram, the heart of any visit
2Hanuman GarhiThe hilltop fort-temple of Hanuman, guardian of the city
3Kanak BhawanThe golden palace-temple gifted to Sita
4Nageshwarnath TempleThe ancient Shiva temple near the river, founded by Kush
5Ram Ki PaidiThe ghats of the Saryu for a bath and the evening aarti
6Guptar GhatWhere Ram is said to have left the world; a sunset close

A representative full day of Ayodhya; plan the order around temple darshan hours and the time of the Saryu Aarti.

See Krishna's Braj Before You Leave

Before you set out for Ayodhya, give Braj its due. See the temples of Vrindavan and Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna, Banke Bihari and the ghats of the Yamuna. Many pilgrims make a full Vrindavan and Mathura visit first, then carry the joy of Braj on to Ram's Ayodhya, the two avatars of Vishnu in one journey.

Best Time to Make the Journey

The road is open all year, but the drive and the darshan at both ends are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. Plan around the festivals, when crowds swell: Holi and Janmashtami in Braj and Deepotsav and Ram Navami in Ayodhya. For a full season plan of the holy city, see our guide to the best time to visit Ayodhya. Avoid the peak of summer for such a long drive.

Practical Tips for the Journey

  • Start very early; it is about an eight-hour drive, so leave Vrindavan at dawn or break it at Lucknow.
  • Consider the train; an overnight train from Mathura saves a long day on the road.
  • Take the expressway; the Agra-Lucknow Expressway is far smoother and faster than NH 34.
  • Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
  • Book ahead for festivals; Ram Navami, Deepotsav, Holi and Janmashtami fill trains and rooms months ahead.
  • Keep a car in Ayodhya; for the darshan and the Saryu Aarti once you arrive.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest with you. Vrindavan to Ayodhya is a genuinely long journey of about eight hours by road and driving it in one dash is tiring; breaking it at Lucknow or taking an overnight train is almost always the better choice. Both Braj and Ayodhya are intense, crowded pilgrim cities, especially at their festivals, so plan your dates and rooms with care. Come with patience and good planning and joining Krishna's land to Ram's city will be one of the most moving pilgrimages you ever make.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For the Vrindavan to Ayodhya trip we arrange the whole thing: a comfortable car or an overnight train for the long leg, a break at Lucknow if you wish and a day of Ayodhya planned around the darshan and the Saryu Aarti. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the travel, the darshan and the days are all taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do not rush Braj and Ayodhya into one tiring day. Give Vrindavan and Mathura their time first, the Banke Bihari darshan and the Yamuna, then travel to Ayodhya by an overnight train or with a night's rest at Lucknow on the way. Reach Ayodhya fresh for the evening Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi and give the Ram Mandir the calm of the next morning. Krishna's land and Ram's city, joined gently like this, is a darshan of both avatars of Vishnu in one blessed journey.
