For the many pilgrims of Kanpur and the industrial heart of Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya is now an easy day's reach. The road east to the birthplace of Lord Ram has become quick and smooth since the Purvanchal Expressway opened and families set out in the morning to be at Ram Lalla's darshan by midday. It is one of the most travelled pilgrim routes in the state and a comfortable half-day drive.
This guide gives you the real Kanpur to Ayodhya distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Ayodhya to Kanpur return and the train and flight options, so you can plan your darshan without any guesswork. I have driven and arranged this road for pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling onward for darshan? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. The new expressways have brought Kanpur and the whole of central Uttar Pradesh within an easy half-day of Ayodhya and I arrange this trip often. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so I have driven this road many times with families, including South Indian guests who fly into the region and set out for Ram's city. It is an easy, pleasant drive, so let me walk you through all of it.

Kanpur to Ayodhya by Road: The Three Routes
The drive east from Kanpur to Ayodhya can be done three ways, all currently avoiding the road closures on NH 34. Here is how they compare:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| Purvanchal Expressway | 242 km | 4 hr 3 min | Fastest route now; avoids closures on NH 34 |
| NE 6 + NH 27 | 234 km | 4 hr 15 min | Shortest distance; avoids closures on NH 34 |
| NH 27 | 239 km | 5 hr | Avoids closures on NH 34; slower |
Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.
In short: the Purvanchal Expressway is the quickest at about 4 hours, a smooth, open run. The NE 6 with NH 27 route is the shortest in distance and almost as fast, while the plain NH 27 route is a little slower.
Ayodhya to Kanpur: The Return Routes
Coming back, the expressway is again the quickest. The main return routes are:
| Route (via) | Distance | Time | Note |
| Purvanchal Expressway | 238 km | 3 hr 59 min | Fastest route, the usual traffic |
| NE 6 + NH 27 | 229 km | 4 hr 14 min | Shortest distance |
| NH 27 | 231 km | 4 hr 22 min | A steady alternative |
Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.
Kanpur to Ayodhya by Train
The train is a comfortable and cheap option on this route. Kanpur Central is one of the biggest junctions in the country and daily trains run to Ayodhya Dham Junction, the renamed Ayodhya station, taking roughly 4 to 6 hours depending on the service. From the station it is a short ride to Ram Ki Paidi and the Ram Janmabhoomi temple. On festival dates such as Ram Navami and Deepotsav the trains fill fast, so book ahead.
Kanpur to Ayodhya by Air
Ayodhya now has its own airport, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham, though a flight from Kanpur is not practical for such a short distance; the drive or train is quicker door to door. Kanpur's own airport at Chakeri has only a limited schedule and the bigger hub is Lucknow, about 90 km away. Most pilgrims from Kanpur simply drive or take the train to Ayodhya, which is the sensible way.
By Bus and Shared Taxi
State and private buses run through the day between Kanpur and Ayodhya, the most economical way to travel, though slower and busier than a car. Shared taxis also ply the route. For a family keeping a darshan schedule, a private car remains the easiest choice and it lets you stop where you wish along the way.
Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?
- In a hurry, by car: take the Purvanchal Expressway, the fastest at about 242 km and 4 hours.
- For the shortest distance: the NE 6 with NH 27 route, about 234 km, is almost as fast.
- On a budget: a daily train to Ayodhya Dham Junction, around 4 to 6 hours, is cheap and comfortable.
- Flying in from afar: fly into Ayodhya or Lucknow and drive on.
- For a one-day pilgrimage: a private car or taxi, door to darshan, is the most comfortable of all.
What to See When You Reach Ayodhya
Once you arrive, a full day of Ayodhya is waiting. The natural sequence runs:
| Order | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Ram Janmabhoomi (Ram Mandir) | The birthplace of Lord Ram, the heart of any visit |
| 2 | Hanuman Garhi | The hilltop fort-temple of Hanuman, guardian of the city |
| 3 | Kanak Bhawan | The golden palace-temple gifted to Sita |
| 4 | Nageshwarnath Temple | The ancient Shiva temple near the river, founded by Kush |
| 5 | Ram Ki Paidi | The ghats of the Saryu for a bath and the evening aarti |
| 6 | Guptar Ghat | Where Ram is said to have left the world; a sunset close |
A representative full day of Ayodhya; plan the order around temple darshan hours and the time of the Saryu Aarti.
Best Time to Make the Journey
The road is open all year, but the drive and the darshan are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. Plan around the great festivals, when crowds swell: Deepotsav and Ram Navami are the most spectacular but also the busiest, so leave early and allow extra time. For a full season-by-season plan, see our guide to the best time to visit Ayodhya.
Practical Tips for the Drive
- Start early; leave Kanpur in the morning to reach Ayodhya with the day ahead for darshan.
- Take the expressway; the Purvanchal Expressway is far smoother and faster than the old highways.
- Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic and roadworks, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
- Book trains ahead on festival dates; Ram Navami, Deepotsav and weekends fill fast.
- Allow for darshan queues; keep time for security and shoe-and-mobile deposit at the Ram Mandir.
- Hire a car with a local driver; he will know the live route, the parking and the quiet hours.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. The Kanpur to Ayodhya road is easy and quick on the expressway, but it is not empty; since the Ram Mandir opened, Ayodhya and the roads into it are far busier and on festival days the last stretch and the parking near the temples can be slow. Road times shift with roadworks and the closures on NH 34, so treat the figures here as a close guide, not a promise. Start early, keep your plans flexible and the drive to Ram's city will be an easy and joyful one.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Ayodhya, Kashi, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For the Kanpur to Ayodhya trip we handle the whole thing: a clean car, a driver who knows the live route and the parking and a day of Ayodhya planned around the darshan and the Saryu Aarti. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the day are all taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Leave Kanpur by mid-morning and take the Purvanchal Expressway straight through and you can reach Ayodhya by early afternoon with the whole city still ahead of you. Keep the first evening for the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi, rest the night in Ayodhya and give the Ram Mandir the calm of the next morning. Done this way, a single easy drive from Kanpur turns into a full, unhurried darshan rather than a rushed day trip. |
