📌 Quick Answer

The Kanpur to Varanasi distance is about 356 km by the fastest road route, via the Ganga Expressway and NH 19, taking around 5 hours 44 minutes by car. Alternatives on NH 19 run about 332 to 353 km and take longer. On this corridor the train is a strong choice too, with many services taking roughly 5 to 7 hours. The nearest major airport is Varanasi's own Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport. For families keeping a darshan plan, a private car or a comfortable train both work well. For the pilgrims and travellers of Kanpur, Varanasi, which the devout call Kashi, is the great destination of a lifetime, the eternal city of Lord Shiva on the bank of the Ganga. It lies south-east down the river, a half-day's drive on the new expressway and it is also one of the busiest train corridors in Uttar Pradesh. As a Varanasi man myself, born on these ghats, let me tell you honestly how best to make this journey.

This guide gives you the real Kanpur to Varanasi distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Varanasi to Kanpur return and the all-important train option, which on this route is genuinely competitive, so you can reach Kashi comfortably and plan your darshan with a clear head. A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Kashi is my own city and I take special care over how people reach her. From Kanpur you have two good choices: the smooth drive down the Ganga Expressway or one of the many trains on this well-served corridor. I will tell you plainly which suits which traveller. And once you arrive, I will make sure the ghats, the aarti and Baba Vishwanath's darshan unfold in the right order. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue.

Kanpur to Varanasi by Road: The Three Routes

The drive south-east from Kanpur to Varanasi can be done three ways, all currently avoiding the road closures on NH 34. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
Ganga Expressway + NH 19356 km5 hr 44 minFastest route now; avoids road closures on NH 34
NH 19332 km6 hr 9 minShortest in distance; avoids road closures on NH 34
NH 19 (alternate)353 km7 hr 17 minAvoids road closures on NH 34; slowest

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: the Ganga Expressway route is the fastest at about 5 hours 44 minutes, even though it is a little longer in distance than the plain NH 19 run. If the expressway is heavy, the 332 km NH 19 route is the shortest, at around 6 hours. All three keep you clear of the closures on NH 34.

Varanasi to Kanpur: The Return Routes

Coming back from Kashi, the mix of NH 19 and the Ganga Expressway is again the quickest. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 19 + Ganga Expressway351 km5 hr 54 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
NH 19 (shortest)328 km6 hr 14 minShortest distance; a little slower
NH 19 (alternate)342 km7 hr 47 minSome traffic, as usual; slowest

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Kanpur to Varanasi by Train: A Strong Choice

Let me be honest: on this route the train is excellent and for a single traveller or a couple it often beats the car. Kanpur Central is one of India's great junctions and many trains run from there to Varanasi Junction (Varanasi Cantt) and Banaras station, with journey times of roughly 5 to 7 hours depending on the service. A good daytime superfast or a Vande Bharat-type service gets you to Kashi rested, without six hours at the wheel. Book your ticket well ahead, especially around Shivratri, Sawan, Dev Deepawali and the Kartik Purnima days, when Kashi is at her busiest. If you are a family carrying luggage and want door-to-ghat convenience, a private car still wins; otherwise, the train is a fine way to reach Varanasi.

Kanpur to Varanasi by Air

Varanasi has its own Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur, about 25 km from the ghats, so flying into Kashi is easy from the major metros. From Kanpur itself, though, flying rarely makes sense: Kanpur's Chakeri airport has only a limited schedule and with the drive or train both around 5 to 6 hours, air travel saves little once you count airport time. Most people from Kanpur simply drive or take the train.

By Bus and Shared Taxi

State and private buses run from Kanpur towards Allahabad (Prayagraj) and Varanasi along NH 19, the most economical way to travel, though slower and less restful than the train. For a pilgrim family keeping a darshan schedule across Kashi's ghats and temples, a private car from door to ghat remains the easiest and it lets you break the journey at Prayagraj's Sangam if you wish.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • In a hurry, by car: take the Ganga Expressway and NH 19, the fastest road option at about 5 hr 44 min.
  • If the expressway is heavy: the 332 km NH 19 route is the shortest, around 6 hours.
  • Solo or a couple: take a good daytime train from Kanpur Central, rested and often faster.
  • Flying from afar: fly straight into Varanasi airport, 25 km from the ghats.
  • For pilgrims with family: a private car, door to ghat, is the most comfortable of all.

What to See When You Reach Varanasi

Kashi rewards a planned day. A first darshan in the eternal city usually runs like this and a car and a guide make the ghats far easier:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Kashi Vishwanath TempleThe golden Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, the heart of Kashi
2Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga AartiThe grand evening aarti on the Ganga, unmissable
3Sunrise Ganga boat rideThe ghats glowing at dawn from the river, the classic Kashi view
4Manikarnika GhatThe great cremation ghat, the city's teaching on life and death
5SarnathWhere the Buddha gave his first sermon, 10 km from the city

A representative first day in Kashi; a boat at dawn and the aarti at dusk are the two fixed points to plan around.

Break the Journey at Prayagraj

Because NH 19 runs through Prayagraj on the way, many pilgrims break the Kanpur to Varanasi drive at the Sangam for a snan at the meeting of the Ganga, Yamuna and the unseen Saraswati. It adds a holy pause to the journey and turns a long drive into a two-tirtha trip. Tell us if you would like this built in.

Best Time to Visit Varanasi

Kashi is eternal and open all year, but the drive and the ghats are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, when the ghats blaze with lamps and Mahashivratri are the city's great nights and the Sawan month brings crowds of kanwariyas to Baba Vishwanath. The summer is very hot and the monsoon raises the river. For the full picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.

Practical Tips for the Journey

  • Decide car or train early; both are good here, so pick by your group size and luggage, then book ahead.
  • Take the Ganga Expressway; it is the fastest road option, even if a touch longer in distance.
  • Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
  • Keep a car in Kashi; the ghats and temples are a warren of lanes and a car plus guide saves hours.
  • Plan a dawn boat and a dusk aarti; these are the two highlights, so build the day around them.
  • Carry light, dress modestly; Kashi's temples and ghats are crowded and sacred, so travel simply.

The Honest Bit

Let me be straight with you. The Kanpur to Varanasi road is a solid half-day on the expressway, but it is not short and NH 19 can be slow in patches. On this particular corridor the train is genuinely one of the best in the country, so do not dismiss it, a good daytime train can be the easiest way of all. And Kashi herself is intense: crowded, ancient, overwhelming to a first-timer. That is exactly why a local hand helps. Come with a plan, keep a car in the city and let the eternal city reveal herself at the right pace.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born on these very ghats and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For the Kanpur to Varanasi trip we handle whichever way you choose: a clean car with an expressway-wise driver or help with the right train and then the whole of Kashi, the dawn boat, the Vishwanath darshan and the evening aarti, in the right order. A Sangam snan at Prayagraj can be added on the way. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the journey and the darshan are both taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: If you can, reach Varanasi by late afternoon, settle near the ghats and go straight to the Dashashwamedh aarti that same evening, there is no finer welcome to Kashi. Keep the next dawn for a boat ride as the sun rises over the river, then Baba Vishwanath's darshan while the morning is still cool. Many of my Kanpur guests break the drive at Prayagraj for a Sangam snan, which turns a long road into a blessed two-tirtha journey. Plan it this way and the eternal city gives you her best.
