📌 Quick Answer

The Varanasi to Gaya distance is about 258 km by the fastest road route, via NH 19, taking around 5 hours 30 minutes by car; other routes via NH 120 run 241 to 252 km and are a little slower. For this journey, though, the train is often the better choice: Varanasi and Gaya sit on the same main line and direct trains cover the trip in roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, faster than the road. Gaya also has its own airport. For pind daan a train with a car waiting in Gaya is ideal. To arrange a Varanasi to Gaya pind daan trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

The road from Varanasi to Gaya joins two of the most sacred cities in the land, Kashi, the city of Shiva and of liberation and Gaya in Bihar, the great city of moksha where pind daan at the Vishnupad temple frees the ancestors. The two belong together in our dharma: many families perform the shraddh rites at Gaya and complete them at Kashi or do both on one journey. Just beside Gaya lies Bodhgaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment, so this short trip east holds three of the holiest places in India.

This guide gives you the real Varanasi to Gaya distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Gaya to Varanasi return and the train option, which here is often quicker than driving, so you can reach the city of moksha without any guesswork. I have arranged this journey for pind daan and Buddhist pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Travelling for the rituals? See our Gaya pind daan package.

  • Driving time: about 5 hours 30 minutes by car on NH 19.
  • By train (often faster): direct trains on the main line cover Varanasi to Gaya in roughly 2.5 to 4 hours.
  • By air: Gaya has its own airport, Gaya International, though the schedule is limited.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Gaya, Bodhgaya, Ayodhya and Prayagraj for more than forty years. The Kashi to Gaya journey is one I arrange constantly, because the two cities are joined in the oldest rites of our dharma: pind daan at Gaya and its completion at the Ganga in my own Kashi. I usually advise the train for the leg, since it is faster than the road here, with our car and a trusted pandit waiting at Gaya. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families, who come to Gaya in great numbers, are looked after in their own tongue. Let me explain all your options.

Varanasi to Gaya by Road: The Three Routes

If you choose to drive, the journey can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 19258 km5 hr 30 minFastest route now; avoids road closures on NH 19
NH 19 + Barun - Daudnagar Rd + NH 120241 km5 hr 37 minShortest distance; avoids closures on NH 19
NH 19 + NH 120252 km6 hr 9 minAvoids road closures on NH 19

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: NH 19 is the fastest road at about 5.5 hours, while the NH 120 routes are a little shorter in distance but slower. Note, though, that the train usually beats all of them for this journey.

Gaya to Varanasi: The Return Routes

Coming back, the picture is much the same. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 19265 km5 hr 39 minFastest route, despite the usual traffic
NH 120 + NH 19250 km5 hr 47 minShortest distance; some traffic, as usual
NH 120255 km6 hr 19 minSome traffic, as usual

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Varanasi to Gaya by Train

For this journey the train is usually the best choice. Varanasi and Gaya sit on the same busy Delhi - Howrah main line and several daily trains connect them directly, covering the distance in roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, comfortably faster than the 5.5-hour drive. Gaya Junction is a short ride from the Vishnupad temple and the Falgu ghats and about 13 km from Bodhgaya. During Pitru Paksha, the great fortnight of pind daan, these trains are extremely crowded and sell out weeks ahead, so book as early as you can.

Varanasi to Gaya by Air

Gaya has its own airport, Gaya International, which handles domestic and seasonal Buddhist-pilgrim flights, though the schedule is limited. For such a short distance, with a fast train available, flying is rarely worth it from Varanasi. Many pilgrims simply take the train or drive, keeping a car and guide waiting in Gaya for the rituals and for Bodhgaya.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • The best choice: take a direct train, roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, faster and easier than the road.
  • By car, if you prefer: NH 19 is the fastest road at about 258 km and 5 hours 30 minutes.
  • For the shortest road: the NH 19 with NH 120 route via Daudnagar, about 241 km.
  • For pind daan with elders: a train for the leg, a private car and a trusted pandit waiting in Gaya.
  • Avoid: a long bus the whole way, unless you have no alternative.

What to See When You Reach Gaya

Gaya and neighbouring Bodhgaya hold some of the holiest sites in India, for both Hindus and Buddhists. A visit usually takes in:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Vishnupad TempleThe great temple over Vishnu's footprint, heart of the pind daan
2Falgu river ghatsWhere the shraddh and pind daan rituals are performed
3Mangla Gauri TempleThe hilltop Shakti Peeth of the goddess
4Bodhgaya & Mahabodhi TempleWhere the Buddha attained enlightenment, about 13 km away
5Pretshila & Ramshila HillsThe hill shrines central to the pind daan circuit
6Brahmayoni HillThe old hill tirtha with its long climb and views

A representative visit to Gaya and Bodhgaya; pind daan is performed with a priest, so plan the ritual order with your guide.

Complete the Rites at Kashi

In the old tradition, the Gaya shraddh is completed at Kashi, so give my city its due as well. Perform or complete the rites by the Ganga, have darshan at the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, stand for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and see the eternal Manikarnika Ghat. Kashi and Gaya together are the fullest of the ancestral pilgrimages.

Best Time to Visit Gaya

Gaya can be visited all year, but the cool months from October to March are the most comfortable for the rituals and for Bodhgaya, which is filled with Buddhist pilgrims through the winter. The single most important time is Pitru Paksha, usually in September or early October, when the Gaya Shraddh mela draws enormous crowds for pind daan; it is the most powerful time for the ritual but by far the busiest. For the Kashi end of the trip, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.

Practical Tips for the Journey

  • Take the train; for Varanasi to Gaya it is faster than driving and far less tiring.
  • Book far ahead for Pitru Paksha; trains, rooms and priests are all stretched during the shraddh fortnight.
  • Arrange your pandit in advance; pind daan is done with a qualified priest at set spots; a guide helps you avoid touts.
  • Keep a car in Gaya; the sites and Bodhgaya are spread out, not walkable together.
  • Pair Gaya with Bodhgaya; it is only 13 km and the two together make a complete trip.
  • Plan to finish at Kashi; many complete the Gaya rites at the Ganga in Varanasi.

The Honest Bit

Let me be honest with you. Varanasi to Gaya is an easy leg if you take the train, but the drive is a tiring five and a half hours, so the train is almost always the better choice here. Gaya during Pitru Paksha is overwhelmed with pilgrims and pind daan involves touts and pressure if you arrive unprepared, so it pays to plan the priest and the ritual order in advance. Come with patience and a good guide and the Kashi to Gaya journey gives you one of the most meaningful pilgrimages in all of Hindu dharma.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Gaya, Bodhgaya, Ayodhya and Prayagraj. For the Varanasi to Gaya trip we arrange the whole thing: a train for the leg or a comfortable car, a clean car and driver waiting in Gaya, a trusted pandit for the pind daan and a plan that pairs the Vishnupad temple with Bodhgaya and completes the rites at Kashi. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families, who come to Gaya in great numbers, are cared for in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the travel, the rituals and the days are all taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do Kashi and Gaya as one ancestral journey, the way it has been done for centuries. Take an early train from Varanasi to Gaya, perform pind daan at the Vishnupad temple and the Falgu in the calm of the morning with a trusted pandit, give the afternoon to Bodhgaya and the Mahabodhi temple just 13 km away and return to Kashi to complete the rites at the Ganga. Planned this way, with the fast train for the leg and a car waiting on the ground, the journey becomes a peaceful, complete tirtha rather than a tiring drive.
