The road from Varanasi to Naimisharanya, which pilgrims also call Neemsar, carries you from the roar of the Ganga ghats to one of the quietest and most ancient tirthas in the land, the forest where the sage Suta narrated the Puranas to eighty-eight thousand rishis. It lies far to the north-west of Kashi, beyond Lucknow and the drive takes most of a day across the new expressways of Uttar Pradesh. Because the route runs right past the Ayodhya and Lucknow region, it is easy and rewarding to break the journey on the way.
This guide gives you the real Varanasi to Naimisharanya distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Naimisharanya to Varanasi return and the train and taxi options, so you can reach this ancient forest-tirtha without any guesswork. I have arranged this road for pilgrims many times; here is exactly how it works. Pairing it with Ayodhya? See our Ayodhya tour packages.

A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Naimisharanya, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Naimisharanya is one of my favourite places to bring devotees, because it is the quietest and most ancient of them all, the very forest where the Puranas were first spoken aloud. From my own Kashi it is a long drive, but the new expressways have made it far easier and it pairs beautifully with Ayodhya on the way. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so I have made this journey many times with families from the South. Let me walk you through all of it.

Varanasi to Naimisharanya by Train
There is no convenient direct train from Varanasi to Naimisharanya, which is why most pilgrims travel by road. Naimisharanya has its own small station and travellers who prefer the train usually go via Lucknow or Sitapur junction and continue from there, a journey that takes most of a day with the connection. If you choose the train, plan the change carefully and book ahead, especially around Amavasya and the Navratri days when the tirtha is busy.
Varanasi to Naimisharanya by Air
There is no airport at Naimisharanya. The nearest is Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport, about 90 km and two to two and a half hours from Neemsar by road, while Varanasi's own airport is the arrival point for many who then drive on. Some pilgrims fly between Varanasi and Lucknow to shorten the journey, then drive the last stretch to Naimisharanya.
By Bus and Shared Taxi
State and private buses connect Varanasi and Lucknow and from Lucknow onward towards Sitapur and Misrikh for Naimisharanya, the most economical way to travel, though slow over such a distance. For a family keeping a darshan schedule across the forest's spread-out kunds and temples, a private car remains the easiest choice and it lets you break the journey at Ayodhya or Lucknow.
Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?
- In a hurry, by car: take NH 19 and the Ganga Expressway, the fastest at about 443 km and 7 hours.
- For the shortest distance: the Purvanchal Expressway, about 414 km, is only a little slower.
- By train: plan a connection via Lucknow or Sitapur to Naimisharanya station.
- Flying in from afar: fly into Lucknow, the nearest airport and drive the last two hours.
- For pilgrims with family: a private car, broken at Ayodhya, is the most comfortable of all.
What to See When You Reach Naimisharanya
Naimisharanya's sacred spots are spread through the old forest-town of Neemsar, on the bank of the Gomti. A gentle first visit might take in:
| Order | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Chakra Tirth | The round holy kund where Vishnu's chakra is said to have fallen |
| 2 | Lalita Devi Temple | The Shakti Peeth of the goddess, the heart of Naimisharanya |
| 3 | Vyas Gaddi | Where Vyas is said to have compiled and taught the Puranas |
| 4 | Hanuman Garhi | The much-loved Hanuman shrine of Neemsar |
| 5 | Dadhichi Kund | The tirtha of Sage Dadhichi, who gave his bones for the gods |
| 6 | Pandav Qila & Manu-Satrupa sthal | The old mound and the tapasthali of Manu and Satrupa |
A representative first day of Naimisharanya; the sites are spread out, so a car and a local guide help greatly.
Break the Journey at Ayodhya
Because the Varanasi to Naimisharanya road runs through the Ayodhya and Lucknow region, the best way to do this long trip is to break it at Ayodhya. Many pilgrims stop for darshan at the Ram Janmabhoomi temple and the Saryu Aarti at Ram Ki Paidi, rest the night and carry on to Neemsar the next day. Before you leave Kashi, of course, give it its due: the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and the evening Ganga Aarti.
Best Time to Visit Naimisharanya
The forest-tirtha is open all year, but it is loveliest and the drive most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. The Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris bring great crowds to the Lalita Devi temple, Somvati Amavasya draws pilgrims to the kunds and Guru Purnima is specially kept in the land of Vyas. Avoid the peak of summer. For the Kashi end of the trip, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.
Practical Tips for the Drive
- Start early; it is most of a day's drive, so leave Varanasi in the morning to reach Neemsar with daylight to spare.
- Break at Ayodhya; it lies on the route and makes the long journey far more rewarding.
- Trust live navigation; the fastest route changes with traffic, so let the app or your driver pick it on the day.
- Keep a car for the sites; Chakra Tirth, Lalita Devi and the other spots are spread across the town.
- Carry water and basics; Neemsar is a small, simple pilgrim town with limited facilities.
- Dress modestly and tread gently; this is an ancient, quiet forest-tirtha, not a tourist spot.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. Varanasi to Naimisharanya is a long drive of about seven hours and Naimisharanya itself is a small, old pilgrim town, not a polished destination; its sites are simple and spread out and facilities are basic compared with Kashi or Lucknow. Direct trains are poor, so the road is really the only sensible way. But that very quietness is its gift: this is one of the most ancient tirthas in the land, the forest where the Puranas were born. Break the drive at Ayodhya, keep a car and let it unfold gently.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Naimisharanya, Ayodhya, Prayagraj and Bodhgaya. For the Varanasi to Naimisharanya trip we handle the whole thing: a clean car, a driver who knows the expressways and the spread-out kunds and a plan that breaks the journey for darshan at Ayodhya. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the road, the darshan and the days are all taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do not drive Varanasi to Naimisharanya in one straight dash; break it at Ayodhya, which sits on the way. Give the first day to Kashi and then the road, stop at Ayodhya for the evening Saryu Aarti and a calm Ram Mandir darshan at dawn and drive the last couple of hours to Neemsar the next morning. Begin at Chakra Tirth when the kund is still and the forest cool, sit a while at Vyas Gaddi and picture the Puranas being spoken aloud and you will feel why the rishis chose this forest above all others. |
