📌 Quick Answer

The Prayagraj to Varanasi distance is about 122 km by the fastest road route, via NH 19, taking around 2 hours 26 minutes by car. Other routes via the Grand Trunk Road run about 123 to 124 km in a similar time. The train is fast and frequent on this busy line, many services taking under two hours. Both cities have their own stations and Varanasi has an airport. For pilgrims doing the Sangam and Kashi together, a private car is the easiest. To arrange a Prayagraj to Varanasi trip, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

From the Triveni Sangam to the ghats of Kashi is one of the shortest and most sacred journeys in all of India, two of the holiest cities on the Ganga, barely two and a half hours apart. Pilgrims who bathe at the meeting of the rivers in Prayagraj almost always carry on to Varanasi for the darshan of Baba Vishwanath and as a Kashi man I have guided this short, blessed road countless times.

This guide gives you the real Prayagraj to Varanasi distance by road, the fastest route and the alternatives, the Varanasi to Prayagraj return and the train option, which on this corridor is fast and frequent, so you can move between the Sangam and the ghats with ease. Doing both cities? See our Ayodhya Varanasi Tour Packages to plan the trip with a local guide.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. The Sangam and Kashi belong together: a bath at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati and then the darshan of the Jyotirlinga in the eternal city. From Prayagraj to Varanasi is a short, easy run and you have a real choice between a comfortable car and a fast train. I will tell you plainly which suits you and once you reach Kashi I will see that the dawn boat, the Vishwanath darshan and the evening aarti fall in the right order. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue.

Prayagraj to Varanasi by Road: The Three Routes

The short drive east from Prayagraj to Varanasi can be done three ways. Here is how they compare:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 19122 km2 hr 26 minFastest route; lighter traffic than usual
Grand Trunk Rd + NH 19 + NH 731B124 km2 hr 31 minA touch longer
Grand Trunk Rd + NH 19123 km2 hr 32 minVia the old GT Road

Figures as shown by live navigation; the quickest option can change through the day, so check before leaving.

In short: NH 19 is the fastest and the shortest, a straight two-and-a-half-hour run. The Grand Trunk Road variants are barely longer, so whichever your driver picks on the day, the journey stays short and easy.

Varanasi to Prayagraj: The Return Routes

Coming back to the Sangam, NH 19 is again the quickest. The main return routes are:

Route (via)DistanceTimeNote
NH 19122 km2 hr 32 minFastest route now due to traffic conditions
NH 731B + NH 19 + Prayagraj Rd125 km2 hr 38 minSome traffic, as usual
NH 19 + Prayagraj Rd129 km2 hr 58 minSome traffic, as usual; slowest

Return times also move with traffic and roadworks; your driver or navigation app will pick the best live route.

Prayagraj to Varanasi by Train: Fast and Frequent

On this corridor the train is excellent. Prayagraj Junction and Varanasi are both on the busy main line and a great many trains connect them, with the faster services covering the 120-odd kilometres in well under two hours, quicker than the drive. For a single traveller or a couple, a daytime train is a fine, restful way to move from the Sangam to the ghats. Book ahead in the Magh Mela and Kumbh seasons and around the great Kashi festivals, when both cities fill with pilgrims. If you are a family with luggage who want door-to-ghat convenience and your own schedule, a private car is still the easiest.

Prayagraj to Varanasi by Air

There is little sense in flying this short hop. Varanasi has its own Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, useful if you are arriving from a distant city, but Prayagraj's airport is limited and the two cities are barely two and a half hours apart by road. Everyone travelling between the Sangam and Kashi simply drives or takes the train.

By Bus and Shared Taxi

Frequent buses run along NH 19 between Prayagraj and Varanasi, the most economical way to travel, though less restful than the train. For a pilgrim family keeping a darshan schedule across the Sangam and Kashi's ghats, a private car from door to ghat remains the easiest and it lets you leave the Sangam after your snan and reach the ghats in time for the evening aarti.

Which Route and Mode Should You Choose?

  • In a hurry, by car: take NH 19, the fastest and shortest at about 122 km and 2.5 hours.
  • Solo or a couple: take a fast daytime train, often quicker than the drive.
  • Arriving from afar: fly into Varanasi airport and do the Sangam as a day trip from Kashi.
  • For pilgrims with family: a private car, door to ghat, is the most comfortable and flexible.
  • Doing the full circuit: let us plan the Sangam, Kashi and Ayodhya together in one yatra.

What to See When You Reach Varanasi

Kashi rewards a planned day. After the Sangam snan, a first darshan in the eternal city usually runs like this:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Kashi Vishwanath TempleThe golden Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, the heart of Kashi
2Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga AartiThe grand evening aarti on the Ganga, unmissable
3Sunrise Ganga boat rideThe ghats glowing at dawn from the river
4The ghats of VaranasiA walk along the sacred steps of the old city
5SarnathWhere the Buddha gave his first sermon, 10 km away

A representative first day in Kashi; a boat at dawn and the aarti at dusk are the two fixed points to plan around.

The Sangam and Kashi: The Classic Pairing

These two cities are made to be seen together. At Prayagraj you take a boat out to the Triveni Sangam for the holiest of baths and pray at Bade Hanuman; then the short road brings you to Kashi for the Ganga aarti and the Vishwanath darshan. Many pilgrims extend the journey to Ayodhya as well, the full Kashi Ayodhya Sangam yatra, tracing the three great tirthas of the north in a single pilgrimage.

Best Time to Make the Journey

Both cities are open all year, but the drive and the ghats are most pleasant in the cool months from October to March. The Magh Mela and the Kumbh fill Prayagraj in winter, while Kashi's great nights are Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima and Mahashivratri. The summer is very hot and the monsoon raises the rivers. For the full picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.

Practical Tips for the Journey

  • Leave the Sangam after your snan; the short road lets you bathe at dawn and reach Kashi by afternoon.
  • Take NH 19; it is the fastest and shortest route between the two cities.
  • Consider the train if solo; a fast daytime train beats the drive and is very restful.
  • Keep a car in Kashi; the ghats and lanes are a maze and a car plus guide saves hours.
  • Plan a dawn boat and dusk aarti; these are the two highlights of Varanasi, so build the day around them.
  • Book ahead in the mela season; the Magh Mela and Kumbh change everything, so plan early.

The Honest Bit

Let me be straight with you. Prayagraj to Varanasi is one of the easiest journeys on the whole pilgrim circuit, barely two and a half hours, so there is little to worry about on the road itself. The real planning is at the two ends: the Sangam can be crowded and the boats managed in mela season and Kashi is intense, ancient and a warren of lanes. Reach the ghats before dusk for the aarti, keep a car and a local hand in Varanasi and this short road links two of the greatest darshans of your life without a wasted hour.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born on these ghats and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Prayagraj, Ayodhya, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For the Prayagraj to Varanasi journey we handle both ends: your Sangam snan with the boat and the pandas, the short transfer by car or train and the whole of Kashi, the dawn boat, the Vishwanath darshan and the evening aarti, in the right order. Ayodhya can be added for the full circuit. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, both cities are taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Keep the morning for the Sangam and the evening for Kashi. Take your boat out to the confluence at dawn for the snan while the water is calm, pray at Bade Hanuman and set off on NH 19 by late morning. You will reach Varanasi with time to settle near the ghats and go straight to the Dashashwamedh aarti that same evening, then a dawn boat the next morning before Baba Vishwanath's darshan. Two of the holiest cities in India, linked in a single unhurried day.

Lucknow to Naimisharanya Distance: Routes, Time, Trains and How to Reach

The Lucknow to Naimisharanya distance is about 90 km by the best road route, via NH 30 and the Sidhauli - Misrikh road, which takes around 2 hours 16 minutes by car. Two near-identical alternatives via NH 230 and NH 30 run about 91 to 92 km in a similar time. A direct train is limited, so most pilgrims travel by road from Lucknow, the nearest major city and airport. For pilgrims a private car is the most comfortable and flexible choice. Nearest Airport to Ayodhya Ram Mandir: Options and How to Reach

The nearest airport to the Ayodhya Ram Mandir is Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya Dham (code AYJ), only about 10 to 15 km from the temple, roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive. If flights there do not suit your dates, the next best options are Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (about 135 km, 2.5 to 3 hours), Gorakhpur (about 140 km), Prayagraj (about 165 km) and Varanasi (about 200 km). Flight schedules at the new Ayodhya airport are still growing, so always check current flights before you book. Varanasi to Gaya Distance: Routes, Time, Trains and How to Reach

The Varanasi to Gaya distance is about 258 km by the fastest road route, via NH 19, taking around 5 hours 30 minutes by car; other routes via NH 120 run 241 to 252 km and are a little slower. For this journey, though, the train is often the better choice: Varanasi and Gaya sit on the same main line and direct trains cover the trip in roughly 2.5 to 4 hours, faster than the road. Gaya also has its own airport. For pind daan a train with a car waiting in Gaya is ideal. To arrange a Varanasi to Gaya pind daan trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
