One of the quiet advantages of winter is that it is also Ayodhya's richest festival season, so the pilgrim who comes for the pleasant weather can, with a little planning, also catch one of the city's great occasions - getting both the comfort and the grandeur in a single trip. It is worth knowing the winter calendar when you choose your dates.
The season opens, in October or November, with the largest of them all - Diwali and the Deepotsav eve, when the Saryu ghats are set alight with countless lamps in the city where the festival of lights began. A few weeks later comes Kartik Purnima, with its bathing and deep-daan on the river. And the season carries through to the new-year darshans at the turn of the year, and on toward Makar Sankranti in mid-January, each drawing the devout in the comfortable cool.
This gives you a real choice about what kind of winter trip you want. Come on an ordinary winter week and you get Ayodhya at its most comfortable and relatively calm - the pleasant weather, the usable full days, the darshan without a festival's crush. Come aligned to a festival and you add the grandeur and the crowds to the comfort, which is a different, bigger experience. Neither is better; they are different, and we will help you choose.
We are honest that a festival in winter, for all the pleasant weather, still brings the crowds, the booked-out hotels and the pressure that any Ayodhya festival does - the season does not remove those. So if a calm darshan in fine weather is what you want, we will steer you to a quiet winter week; if you want the festival too, we will plan for its crowds. Either way the weather is on your side.
The one practical caution of the season is the deep-winter fog, which in late December and January can settle thickly over the north Indian plains and delay trains and flights, sometimes by hours. It is rarely a trip-ruiner, but it rewards a little planning - a sensible buffer around arrival and departure, and a flexible attitude to the exact timing of the first morning. We watch the conditions for your dates and build that slack in, so a foggy dawn is an atmosphere to enjoy rather than a connection missed.
