The breadth of Uttar Pradesh between Agra and Kashi is easily crossed, and our first task is to make the crossing comfortable and effortless. Agra is connected to Varanasi by good long-distance trains and by the fine expressways that now run across the state, and we advise you honestly on which suits your group - the train for its ease and restfulness over this distance, a private car by the expressway for door-to-door flexibility - and then book it, so the journey is settled before you set out rather than left to the uncertainty of arranging it yourself.
For most families we suggest the train or a private car. A good train makes a restful journey across the state and sets you down near the heart of Varanasi; a private car by the expressway gives the freedom to leave when you wish, to stop as you like, and to be carried from your own door in Agra to your hotel by the ghats without a change. We time and book whichever you choose and receive you in Varanasi, so the distance becomes a minor matter rather than an obstacle.
The three-day shape of the trip is deliberate and, for this distance, ideal. It allows a full first day for the journey and the evening aarti, a complete second day for the dawn boat, the Vishwanath darshan and Sarnath, and a gentle third day for the remaining temples and the return - so nothing is rushed and nothing essential is missed. A shorter trip would strain against the distance; these three unhurried days do the pilgrimage justice.
At the Kashi end we handle everything exactly as for any of our guests - a comfortable hotel near the ghats, the darshan managed through the Dham corridor and the crowds, the aarti and the dawn boat timed and arranged, the key temples and Sarnath planned in, a private car throughout. An Agra family, or a traveller arriving from the Taj, steps into a trip that is already wholly organised, with only the worship and the experience left for them to do.
Comfort is calibrated to the traveller, whether a local family or a visitor extending a Golden Triangle tour. We choose clean, comfortable stays near the ghats, a private air-conditioned car, good vegetarian food, and a considerate pace, so the journey to Kashi is itself a pleasure and never an ordeal, and the contrast between the Mughal splendour left behind and the ancient devotion ahead is savoured rather than endured. The devotion is deepened by being comfortable.
We serve two kinds of Agra traveller, and shape the trip to each. For the people of Agra themselves, this is the natural pilgrimage across their own state to the city of Shiva, to be made properly at last. For the great number of tourists who come for the Taj, Indian and foreign alike, it is the profound onward extension to Kashi, often added to a Golden Triangle itinerary, and we arrange it to flow smoothly from their Agra visit. The same comfortable journey serves both.
And we advise on the season as part of the planning. The winter months are loveliest for the dawn boat and the aarti and kindest for the journey; the summer is hot across the plain and better met with early starts and good air-conditioning; the monsoon swells the Ganga to a dramatic fullness. We help you choose your dates and book the travel and the stay around festivals and crowds, so your three days are as smooth as they are devotional.
