📌 Quick Answer

You can reach Varanasi by air, rail or road. It has its own Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur, about 25 km from the ghats, with flights from across India and some abroad. By train it is superb: Varanasi Junction (Cantt), Banaras and Kashi stations sit on major lines with trains from everywhere. By road it is well linked via NH 19 from Prayagraj, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Gaya and beyond. To plan your arrival and your Kashi darshan, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Varanasi, the eternal city of Kashi, is Lord Shiva's own abode on the bank of the Ganga and one of the best-connected pilgrim cities in India. As a man born on these ghats, I can tell you it is easy to reach from almost anywhere, by its own international airport, by one of the busiest railway hubs in the north or by the fast roads of NH 19. Whether you come for a single Ganga aarti or a long stay in Kashi, here is every way to arrive, set out plainly. Browse our Ayodhya Varanasi Tour Packages to plan the trip with a local guide.

How to Reach Varanasi: Key Takeaways

  • By air: Varanasi has its own international airport (Babatpur), about 25 km from the ghats, well connected across India.

  • By road: well linked via NH 19 from Prayagraj, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Gaya and the wider region.
  • Local transport: autos, e-rickshaws, app cabs and boats reach the ghats and temples.
  • Peak nights: Dev Deepawali and Mahashivratri fill the city, so book travel and stay far ahead.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born on these very ghats and guiding pilgrims across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya for more than forty years. Reaching Varanasi is the easy part; the art is arriving well and then stepping into the city in the right order, a dawn boat, the Kashi Vishwanath darshan and the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh. Let me give you every arrival option honestly, then take the strain off the rest. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue.

How to Reach Varanasi by Air

Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur lies about 25 km north-west of the ghats, roughly 45 minutes to an hour by road. It is well connected to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and other Indian cities, with some international and seasonal flights too, so for most out-of-state and overseas pilgrims flying straight into Varanasi is the quickest way. Prepaid taxis and app cabs run from the airport to the ghats and hotels.

Flight schedules change seasonally; confirm current direct services to Varanasi when you book.

How to Reach Varanasi by Train

The train is Kashi's great strength. Varanasi Junction, known as Varanasi Cantt, is one of the busiest stations in the country and Banaras station (Manduadih) and Kashi station share the load, all on major trunk routes with trains from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Prayagraj, Lucknow, Patna and across India, including Vande Bharat and Rajdhani services. For most pilgrims the train is the easiest and most comfortable way to arrive. Book well ahead around Dev Deepawali, Mahashivratri and the Sawan month, when demand is enormous.

How to Reach Varanasi by Road

Varanasi is well linked by road, mainly along NH 19 (the old Grand Trunk Road) and newer expressways, an easy drive from the pilgrim cities of the region. For exact live figures and routes, see our detailed guides, for example the drive from Lucknow to Varanasi or the short run between Varanasi and Ayodhya. The approximate road distances below are a rough guide only.

FromApprox. distanceApprox. time
Prayagrajabout 125 kmabout 2.5 hr
Ayodhyaabout 200 kmabout 4 hr
Lucknowabout 320 kmabout 6 hr
Gayaabout 250 kmabout 5 hr
Patnaabout 250 kmabout 5 hr
Delhiabout 800 kmabout 12 hr

These road distances and times are approximate and vary by route, roadworks and traffic; see our city-to-Varanasi guides for exact live figures and confirm before you travel.

By Bus and Local Transport

State and private buses reach Varanasi from Prayagraj, Lucknow, Gorakhpur and nearby cities along NH 19, the most economical option though less restful than the train. Within the city, autos, e-rickshaws, app cabs and cycle-rickshaws are everywhere and the ghats are often best reached on foot through the old lanes or by boat along the river. A walk along the ghats of Varanasi at dawn is itself part of the pilgrimage.

What to See When You Reach Varanasi

Once you arrive, Kashi rewards you with a planned day. A first darshan in the eternal city usually runs like this:

OrderPlaceWhy it fits
1Kashi Vishwanath TempleThe golden Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva, the heart of Kashi
2Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga AartiThe grand evening aarti on the Ganga, unmissable
3Sunrise Ganga boat rideThe ghats glowing at dawn from the river
4Manikarnika GhatThe great cremation ghat, the city's teaching on life and death
5SarnathWhere the Buddha gave his first sermon, about 10 km away

A representative first day in Kashi; a boat at dawn and the aarti at dusk are the two fixed points to plan around.

Explore More of Kashi

Beyond the first day, the city holds far more. Keep time for:

Best Time to Reach Varanasi

Kashi is eternal and open all year, but the cool months from October to March are the most comfortable for travel and the ghats. Dev Deepawali on Kartik Purnima, when lakhs of lamps light the ghats and Mahashivratri are the city's great nights, while the Sawan month brings crowds of kanwariyas. The summer is very hot and the monsoon raises the river. For the full picture, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.

Pair Varanasi with the Wider Circuit

Because Kashi sits at the centre of the holy circuit, most pilgrims combine it with nearby tirthas. The short hop to Sarnath follows the Buddha's trail, while many continue on to Ram's forest of exile at Chitrakoot or east to Gaya for the pind daan. We can thread any of these into your Kashi visit.

The Honest Bit

Let me be straight with you. Reaching Varanasi is genuinely easy, the flights, trains and roads are all excellent, so arrival is rarely the problem. The real thing to prepare for is the city itself: Kashi is ancient, intense and a warren of narrow lanes where vehicles cannot go, so from the station or airport you will often walk or take a rickshaw the last stretch to the ghats. On the great nights, Dev Deepawali above all, the crowds are immense. Come with your travel and stay booked early, keep a local hand for the lanes and the eternal city gives you her best.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born on these ghats and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Kashi, Ayodhya, Prayagraj, Naimisharanya and Bodhgaya. For your Varanasi trip we handle it all: help with the right flight or train, a clean car and a driver who knows the city, the dawn boat and the Vishwanath darshan in the right order and the evening aarti, with Sarnath, Ayodhya and Prayagraj added for the full circuit. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, your arrival and your darshan are both taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Take an overnight train or an evening flight into Varanasi, settle near the ghats and go straight to the Dashashwamedh aarti that same evening, there is no finer welcome to Kashi. Keep the next dawn for a boat as the sun rises over the river, then Baba Vishwanath's darshan while the morning is cool and Sarnath in the afternoon. Plan it this way and the city unfolds in exactly the right order.
