For most pilgrims arriving in Bihar, Patna is the gateway and Bodhgaya, where the Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, is about two hours south. As the state capital, Patna has the biggest airport and railway station in the region, so a great many visitors to the Mahabodhi Temple begin their journey here. The road down is easy and quick and I have arranged this leg for many Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims alike.
This guide gives you the real Patna to Bodhgaya distance by road, the fastest route and the alternative, the Bodhgaya to Patna return and the train and flight options, so you can reach the Buddha's seat without any guesswork. A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Bodhgaya, Gaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya for more than forty years. Patna is the natural gateway to the Buddhist heart of Bihar and the drive down to Bodhgaya is one of the easiest legs on the whole circuit, a smooth two hours. Many of my guests fly or take the train into Patna, then travel on to the Mahabodhi Temple. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. Let me walk you through it.

Patna to Bodhgaya by Train
There is no useful separate railway station for Bodhgaya; the railhead is Gaya Junction, about 15 km from the Mahabodhi Temple. From Patna, frequent trains run to Gaya Junction in roughly two to three hours and a short taxi completes the trip. This is the same railhead used by pilgrims coming from Varanasi to Gaya for the shraddha and by those travelling from Lucknow to Gaya, so Gaya Junction is the common gateway for the whole Gaya-Bodhgaya region. Book ahead during Pitru Paksha and the winter Buddhist season.
Patna to Bodhgaya by Air
Patna's Jayaprakash Narayan International Airport is the biggest in the region, with wide connections across India, so many pilgrims and tourists fly into Patna and drive the two hours down to Bodhgaya. Gaya International Airport is in fact closer to Bodhgaya, about 12 km and serves the Buddhist circuit with seasonal and international flights, but its schedule is limited, so Patna is often the more practical arrival point. From either airport, a taxi takes you on to the Mahabodhi Temple.
By Bus and Shared Taxi
Regular buses run from Patna towards Gaya and Bodhgaya along NH 22, the most economical way to travel, though slower and less comfortable than a car. For a pilgrim family who want to combine the Gaya pind daan with a calm visit to Bodhgaya, a private car kept for the trip is the easiest, letting you move between Patna, Gaya and Bodhgaya at your own pace.
What to See at Bodhgaya
Bodhgaya is the holiest place in the Buddhist world, its sacred sites clustered around the Mahabodhi Temple. A first visit usually takes in:
| Order | Place | Why it fits |
| 1 | Mahabodhi Temple | The UNESCO World Heritage temple at the place of the Buddha's enlightenment |
| 2 | The Bodhi Tree | The descendant of the very pipal under which the Buddha awakened |
| 3 | Great Buddha Statue | The 80-foot Buddha, a landmark of Bodhgaya |
| 4 | The monasteries | Thai, Japanese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and other world temples |
| 5 | Niranjana River & Sujata Stupa | The river of the Buddha's fast and the village of Sujata |
| 6 | Dungeshwari Caves | The hill caves of the Buddha's years of austerity |
A representative first day at Bodhgaya; a car and a local guide help you take in the spread-out monasteries.
Pair Bodhgaya with Gaya and the Buddhist Trail
Most pilgrims pair Bodhgaya with neighbouring Gaya, only about 15 km away, where Hindus offer the pind daan at the Vishnupad Temple and the Falgu. And the Buddha's own journey continued west to Sarnath near Varanasi, where he gave his first sermon, so many travellers follow the full Buddhist circuit from Bodhgaya onward. Our Kashi Buddha Trail ties Bodhgaya, Sarnath and Kashi into one journey.
Best Time to Visit Bodhgaya
Bodhgaya is loveliest in the cool months from October to March, the main Buddhist pilgrimage season, when monks and pilgrims gather from across the world and the monasteries are at their liveliest. Buddha Purnima, the Buddha's birthday in spring, is a great festival. Avoid the fierce Bihar summer. If you are also visiting Gaya for the pind daan, Pitru Paksha, usually in September or October, is the most sacred and most crowded time.
Practical Tips for the Journey
- Fly or train into Patna; it is the region's biggest hub, then an easy two-hour drive down.
- Or take a train to Gaya Junction; the railhead for Bodhgaya, a short taxi from the temple.
- Keep a car for the region; it lets you move between Patna, Gaya and Bodhgaya at your pace.
- Go early to the Bodhi Tree; the dawn chanting under the tree is the finest moment of the day.
- Dress modestly at the Mahabodhi Temple; it is an active place of worship and meditation.
- Book ahead in season; winter and Buddha Purnima fill Bodhgaya and Pitru Paksha fills Gaya.
The Honest Bit
Let me be honest with you. The Patna to Bodhgaya road is short and easy, so there is nothing to worry about on the drive itself. Patna is a busy capital city, useful mainly as an arrival hub rather than a pilgrimage stop, while Bodhgaya is calm, green and the best-kept of all the Buddhist sites. My advice is simple: use Patna only to arrive, then get down to Bodhgaya and give it unhurried time, a full day at least, with Gaya added for the pind daan if that is your purpose. Reach it unhurried and the Buddha's seat gives a peace you will not forget.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Bodhgaya, Gaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. For the Patna to Bodhgaya trip we handle it all: your arrival at Patna by air or train, a clean car for the two-hour drive, a calm day at the Mahabodhi Temple and the Gaya pind daan with experienced pandas if you wish, with the Buddhist trail to Sarnath and Kashi added. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the gateway and the Buddha's seat are both taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Treat Patna only as your arrival point. Land or step off the train, take the smooth NH 22 drive down and reach Bodhgaya by midday with the whole afternoon and evening for the Mahabodhi Temple. Circle the Bodhi Tree as the lamps are lit and the monks chant and let the stillness settle. Keep the next morning for the monasteries and the Great Buddha and if your purpose is the shraddha, give a morning to the Gaya pind daan nearby. Used this way, the gateway road opens into the calmest pilgrimage in Bihar. |
