📌 Quick Answer

In Gaya, the key places are the Vishnupad Temple, the Falgu river and the pind daan ghats, the Pretshila and Ramshila hills, Mangla Gauri Shakti Peeth and Brahmayoni Hill. In Bodhgaya, see the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree, the Great Buddha Statue, the great monasteries of the Buddhist nations, the Sujata Stupa and the Dungeshwari Caves. The two towns are about 15 km apart and best seen together over two days. To plan a Gaya and Bodhgaya pilgrimage, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Gaya and Bodhgaya sit just fifteen kilometres apart in Bihar, yet between them they hold two of the great currents of Indian faith. Gaya is the foremost city of the ancestors, where Hindus offer the pind daan at the Vishnupad Temple and the Falgu river to free the departed. Bodhgaya, a short drive away, is where Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha beneath the Bodhi Tree, the holiest place in the Buddhist world. Together they make one profound pilgrimage and here is every place worth your time in both, from a guide who has walked them many times. Browse our Ayodhya Varanasi Tour Packages to plan the trip with a local guide.

Gaya and Bodhgaya at a Glance: Key Takeaways

  • Gaya is for the ancestors: the Vishnupad Temple, the Falgu river and the pind daan ghats and hills.
  • Bodhgaya is for the Buddha: the Mahabodhi Temple, the Bodhi Tree, the Great Buddha and the world monasteries.
  • They are close: only about 15 km apart, easily combined over two days.
  • Best season: October to March; Pitru Paksha for the Gaya shraddha, winter for Bodhgaya.
  • Plan for two moods: Gaya solemn and ritual, Bodhgaya calm and contemplative.

A Word From Your Guide

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims across Gaya, Bodhgaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya for more than forty years. I love bringing people to these two towns because they teach opposite truths side by side, Gaya the release of the ancestors, Bodhgaya the release of the self. The places are spread out and the rituals need care, so a local hand helps. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are looked after in their own tongue. Let me take you through every site.

Places to Visit in Gaya

Gaya's sacred sites gather around the Vishnupad Temple and the Falgu river, the heart of the pind daan. The main places are:

PlaceWhat it isGood to know
Vishnupad TempleThe temple of Lord Vishnu's footprint on the FalguThe centre of the Gaya shraddha
Falgu RiverThe sacred, mostly dry river where tarpan is offeredPind daan performed on its banks
Pretshila HillHilltop shrine for the rites of the departedReached by steps; a key shraddha spot
Ramshila HillHill with the Rameshwar temple, near PretshilaPart of the pind daan circuit
Mangla GauriA revered Shakti Peeth on a hill above GayaOne of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas
Brahmayoni HillSteep hill with temples and city viewsLinked to the legend of Gayasur

Gaya's pind daan rites are best performed with experienced Gayawal pandas; we arrange the pandas and the sequence.

Places to Visit in Bodhgaya

Bodhgaya's sites cluster around the Mahabodhi Temple, with the great world monasteries spread through the town. The main places are:

PlaceWhat it isGood to know
Mahabodhi TempleUNESCO site at the spot of the Buddha's enlightenmentThe Vajrasana (diamond throne) sits beside it
The Bodhi TreeDescendant of the pipal under which the Buddha awakenedDawn chanting here is unforgettable
Great Buddha StatueThe 80-foot seated Buddha, a Bodhgaya landmarkSet in a garden near the monasteries
World monasteriesThai, Japanese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and moreEach in its own national style
Sujata Stupa & KutiAcross the Niranjana, marking the village of SujataWhere Sujata offered the Buddha kheer
Dungeshwari CavesHill caves of the Buddha's years of austerityAbout 12 km from the Mahabodhi Temple

A representative round of Bodhgaya; a car and a local guide help with the spread-out monasteries and the Sujata and Dungeshwari sites across the river.

A Suggested Two-Day Plan

  • Day 1, Gaya: begin the pind daan early with the pandas at the Vishnupad Temple and the Falgu, then Pretshila and Ramshila and Mangla Gauri in the afternoon.
  • Day 2, Bodhgaya: a dawn visit to the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree, the Great Buddha and the monasteries by day and the Sujata Stupa or Dungeshwari Caves if time allows.
  • Keep a car: the two towns are 15 km apart and the sites are spread out, so a car for both days is the easiest.

Extend the Trail to Sarnath in Kashi

Bodhgaya is where the Buddha was enlightened; Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, is where he gave his first sermon, so the two belong on the same trail. If you are adding Varanasi, keep half a day for the Buddhist heart of Kashi:

For the short hop, see our guide to the drive from Varanasi to Sarnath.

Pair Gaya and Bodhgaya with Kashi

Most pilgrims reach Gaya and Bodhgaya by way of Kashi, which sits on the same railway line and holds the Ganga darshan. While you are there, keep time for the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh, a dawn boat ride on the Ganga and Manikarnika Ghat. Many travel east from Varanasi to Gaya for the shraddha or from Lucknow to Gaya from the capital.

Best Time to Visit Gaya and Bodhgaya

The cool months from October to March are the most comfortable for both towns. For Gaya, Pitru Paksha, usually in September or October, is the great season for pind daan, when the city is at its most crowded and most charged. For Bodhgaya, the winter is the main Buddhist pilgrimage season and Buddha Purnima in spring is the great festival, kept at Sarnath too. Avoid the fierce Bihar summer. If you are pairing with Kashi, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.

The Honest Bit

Let me be straight with you. Gaya and Bodhgaya are very different in feel and it helps to expect that. Gaya town, around the Vishnupad, is old, crowded and intensely ritual, especially in Pitru Paksha and the pind daan is a solemn, demanding rite best done with good pandas. Bodhgaya, by contrast, is calm, green and beautifully kept, the gentlest of the Buddhist sites. Facilities in Gaya are basic; Bodhgaya is more comfortable. Give each its own day and its own mood, keep a car for the spread-out sites and the two together make one of the most moving journeys in the land.

Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice

I am Rajeev Sharma, born in Varanasi and guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Gaya, Bodhgaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. For Gaya and Bodhgaya we handle the whole thing: experienced Gayawal pandas for the pind daan, a car for both towns, a calm day at the Mahabodhi Temple and the Buddhist trail to Sarnath and Kashi if you wish. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the ancestors' rite and the Buddha's seat are both taken care of.

Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Do Gaya in the morning and Bodhgaya in the calm of evening. Offer the pind daan early at the Vishnupad and the Falgu while the rites are unhurried, keep the midday for Mangla Gauri and the hills, then drive the short road to Bodhgaya for the lamps and chanting under the Bodhi Tree at dusk. Give the next full day to the Mahabodhi Temple and the monasteries, crossing to the Sujata Stupa if you can. Seen this way, you move from the release of the ancestors to the awakening of the Buddha in two gentle days.

For pilgrims a private car is the most comfortable choice. To arrange a Varanasi to Naimisharanya trip with a local guide, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.

Prayagraj to Gaya Distance: Routes, Time, Trains and How to Reach

The Prayagraj to Gaya distance is about 358 km by the fastest road route, via NH 19, but it takes around 7 hours by car, so the road is a long haul. For most pilgrims the train is better: Prayagraj and Gaya are both on the main Delhi-Howrah line, with frequent direct trains that are usually faster than driving. Gaya also has its own airport. For pind daan and a Bodhgaya visit, we usually advise the train. To arrange a Prayagraj to Gaya pilgrimage, call or WhatsApp +91 7302265809.
