Ayodhya

Home to the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, Hanuman Garhi, and Dashrath Mahal. The Saryu aarti at sunset is quieter than Varanasi's,it moves people who expected only the Ram Mandir to remember it most.

How to Reach Ayodhya: Flights, Trains and Roads, From a Guide Who Runs This Route All Year

Reach Ayodhya by air to Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), about 8 to 10 km from Ram Mandir; by train to Ayodhya Dham Junction, about 1 km from the temple; or by road from Lucknow (~135 km), Prayagraj (~165 km) or Varanasi (~200 km). Inside the city, e-rickshaws are the best way through the old lanes, and cars cannot reach the inner temple zone.

I am Rajeev Sharma, and I move pilgrims along these routes every week of the season. Here is the honest, practical version of how to get to Ayodhya and, just as importantly, how to get the last kilometre to the temple door.

Reaching Ayodhya by air

Ayodhya's own airport, Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ), opened in 2024 and sits roughly 8 to 10 km from the temple, about 15 to 25 minutes by road. It has growing domestic connectivity, with flights linking cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and others; routes and frequencies change, so check current schedules.

If AYJ does not suit your dates or city, fly into Lucknow (Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport), about 135 to 140 km away and the larger hub, then continue by road or train.

From the ground: The new airport is a gift for pilgrims who used to face a long drive from Lucknow. But flight options still vary by season and city. I always check both AYJ and Lucknow before deciding, and for many travellers the Lucknow flight plus a planned road transfer still works out better.

Reaching Ayodhya by train

Train is the most convenient arrival for most pilgrims. Ayodhya Dham Junction, the renamed and redeveloped main station, is about 1 km from Ram Mandir, so you are almost at the temple when you step off. The secondary station, Ayodhya Cantt (Faizabad Junction), is about 8 to 9 km out.

Ayodhya is well connected by rail to many cities, with services growing since the temple opened. Book in advance, especially in peak season and around festivals, when trains fill fast .

Reaching Ayodhya by road

The redeveloped highways make road travel smooth. Common approaches are from Lucknow (~135 km, 3 to 4 hrs), Prayagraj (~165 km), Varanasi (~200 km, 4 to 5 hrs) and Gorakhpur (~140 km). State and private buses, taxis and private cars all serve Ayodhya. For comfort, especially with elders, a private car with a driver is the easiest way, and it lets you stop where you like along the way.

From the major cities

  • From Lucknow: ~135 km, 3 to 4 hours by road, or a short train hop. Lucknow is the most common arrival and departure city and a feasible base for a long day-trip if you start very early.
  • From Varanasi: ~200 km, 4 to 5 hours by road, often broken at Prayagraj. The classic Kashi to Ayodhya pilgrimage pairing.
  • From Prayagraj: ~165 km, a natural third stop with Varanasi for the Triveni Sangam.
  • From Delhi: by direct flight to AYJ where available, or overnight train, then the short transfer to the temple.
  • From Gorakhpur: ~140 km, a common approach for those combining Ayodhya with the wider eastern circuit.

Getting around Ayodhya & the last mile to Ram Mandir

Inside Ayodhya, e-rickshaws are the best way through the narrow old lanes, cheap and quick, with short hops costing roughly ₹20 to ₹50. Autos and app cabs handle longer distances to Faizabad or Guptar Ghat. The crucial thing to know: cars cannot reach the inner temple zone. You will be dropped at the edge of the restricted lanes and continue by e-rickshaw, battery e-cart or on foot. Seniors can request wheelchairs and e-carts near Ram Mandir.

From the ground: Do not fight the e-rickshaw. Tourists sometimes insist their car take them to the temple gate and end up stuck in a lane that was never meant for cars. Step into an e-rickshaw at the edge of the old city and you will reach faster and calmer every time.

The Varanasi to Ayodhya route

The most rewarding way to see Ayodhya is as part of the Kashi circuit. Varanasi is about 200 km away, four to five hours by road, usually with Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam as a natural midpoint. We run the Varanasi to Ayodhya route end to end, handling the train or car, the Prayagraj stop, and the transfers, so you travel as a guest rather than a logistics manager.

Reaching Ayodhya by air

8 questions

Does Ayodhya have an airport?

Yes. Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, Ayodhya (AYJ), opened in 2024, about 8 to 10 km from the temple, with growing domestic connectivity. Lucknow's airport, about 135 to 140 km away, is the larger alternative.

What is the name of Ayodhya airport?

Maharishi Valmiki International Airport, with the code AYJ. It is sometimes referred to by its earlier names, but this is the official name of the new Ayodhya airport.

How far is Ayodhya airport from Ram Mandir?

Roughly 8 to 10 km, about 15 to 25 minutes by road. Taxis, autos and buses are available from the airport, and we arrange direct transfers within our packages.

Which cities have flights to Ayodhya?

AYJ has growing domestic links to cities such as Delhi and Mumbai, with routes and frequencies changing over time. Check current schedules close to your dates, and consider Lucknow as a fallback hub.

Are there international flights to Ayodhya?

The airport is designated international and handles select services, but most international travellers still route via Delhi or Lucknow and connect onward. Verify current international connectivity before booking.

Should I fly to Ayodhya or Lucknow?

If a convenient AYJ flight matches your city and dates, fly direct, it saves the long road transfer. Otherwise, Lucknow offers more options; fly there and continue by car or train. I check both before deciding.

How do I get from Ayodhya airport to the temple?

By taxi, auto or pre-arranged transfer for the 8 to 10 km, then e-rickshaw for the final lanes near Ram Mandir. We include airport pickups in our packages so you are met on arrival.

Is the Ayodhya airport open and operational in 2026?

Yes, it has been operational since 2024 with expanding services. As with any newer airport, routes evolve, so confirm your specific flight close to travel.

How much does an e-rickshaw cost in Ayodhya?

Short hops cost roughly ₹20 to ₹50. Agree the fare before you start. E-rickshaws are the cheapest and most practical way around the old city.

Planning & practical

10 questions

What is the best way to reach Ayodhya?

For most pilgrims, train to Ayodhya Dham Junction is the most convenient, arriving about 1 km from the temple. Fly to AYJ if a good route fits, or drive from Lucknow. We tailor the arrival to your city and group.

Can I do a day trip to Ayodhya from Lucknow?

Yes, comfortably, if you leave early. The 135 km drive lets you reach Ram Mandir before the midday closure and return by evening. An overnight stay is gentler but a day-trip is feasible.

Can I do a day trip to Ayodhya from Varanasi?

It is a long day at 200 km each way, doable but tiring, and you will likely miss the evening aarti on the return. An overnight in Ayodhya is far better for the Varanasi pairing.

How many days do I need in Ayodhya once I arrive?

One full day covers the core circuit if you start early; two days is comfortable. See our Ayodhya itinerary and the full Ayodhya guide to plan.

What is the best time of year to travel to Ayodhya?

October to March for mild weather. Avoid April to June heat and the festival peaks of Deepotsav and Ram Navami unless you plan months ahead. See our best time to visit page.

Is reaching Ayodhya easy for elderly travellers?

Yes, with planning. Train to Ayodhya Dham Junction or a flight to AYJ minimises road time, and a private transfer plus an e-cart for the last stretch keeps it gentle. We build senior-friendly arrivals into our packages.

Do you arrange transfers and pickups in Ayodhya?

Yes. We handle airport and station pickups, intercity transfers, and the local e-rickshaw and e-cart legs, so you are met on arrival and never left working out the last mile. Message me, Rajeev, on WhatsApp at +91 7302265809.

Should I book a package or arrange travel myself?

If you are comfortable with trains, transfers and the last-mile lanes, you can do it yourself. For first-timers, seniors, groups or festival dates, a package removes the friction and the darshan planning. See our Ayodhya packages.

Can foreigners travel to Ayodhya easily?

Yes. Reach by AYJ or Lucknow and onward transfer, carry your passport and a valid Indian visa or e-Visa, and use the same trains, taxis and e-rickshaws. Our multilingual guides make the arrival smooth.

Where should I stay to be near the temple?

Near Ram Mandir and Naya Ghat for walking convenience, or slightly out along Faizabad Road for quieter, more spacious stays. We match the stay to your pace and budget. See the full Ayodhya guide.
