Bodhgaya, in Bihar, is the holiest place in the Buddhist world, for it was here, beneath a pipal tree on the bank of the Niranjana, that Prince Siddhartha became the Buddha, the Awakened One. Around the great Mahabodhi Temple spread the monasteries of the Buddhist nations, the sacred spots of the Buddha's six years of search and quiet riverside shrines. Having guided pilgrims here over the years, let me take you through all the places worth your time in Bodhgaya. Browse our Ayodhya Varanasi Tour Packages to plan the trip with a local guide.
Places to Visit in Bodhgaya: Key Takeaways
- The holiest spot: the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree, with the Vajrasana beside it.
- The landmark: the 80-foot Great Buddha Statue in its garden.
- The world's monasteries: the Thai, Japanese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and other national temples.
- Beyond the centre: the Sujata Stupa, the Dungeshwari Caves and Muchalinda Lake.
- Best plan: one full day for the core, two for the outlying sites, in the cool season.
A Word From Your Guide
I am Rajeev Sharma, guiding pilgrims across Bodhgaya, Gaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya for more than forty years. Bodhgaya is the calmest and best-kept of all the great pilgrimage towns, a green, peaceful place where the whole Buddhist world gathers. The secret is to give the Mahabodhi Temple unhurried time, especially at dawn and then wander the monasteries slowly. Let me take you through every place worth seeing. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease.
The Top Places to Visit in Bodhgaya
If you see only a handful, make it these, the heart of the Buddha's awakening:
| Place | What it is | Good to know |
| Mahabodhi Temple | UNESCO World Heritage shrine at the spot of enlightenment | Dawn chanting is unforgettable; go early |
| The Bodhi Tree | Descendant of the pipal under which the Buddha awakened | Behind the temple; pilgrims meditate beneath it |
| Vajrasana | The Diamond Throne, the exact seat of enlightenment | A gilded platform beside the Bodhi Tree |
| Great Buddha Statue | The 80-foot seated Buddha, a Bodhgaya landmark | Set in a garden near the monasteries |
| Animesh Lochan Chaitya | Where the Buddha gazed at the Bodhi Tree in gratitude | A short walk within the temple complex |
| The world monasteries | Thai, Japanese, Tibetan, Bhutanese and more | Each in its own national style; free to visit |
Give the Mahabodhi Temple the early morning, when the chanting and the light are at their finest.
More Places to See in and Around Bodhgaya
- Sujata Stupa & Sujata Kuti: across the Niranjana, marking the village girl who offered the Buddha kheer.
- Dungeshwari (Mahakala) Caves: about 12 km away, the hill caves of the Buddha's years of austerity.
- Muchalinda Lake: the serene temple-tank where the serpent king is said to have sheltered the Buddha.
- Chankramana: the raised 'jewel walk' where the Buddha paced in meditation.
- Archaeological Museum: Bodhgaya's museum of Buddhist sculpture and relics.
- Niranjana (Falgu) River & Tibetan Market: the riverside and the lively market for prayer flags and crafts.
Bodhgaya's sites are spread from the Mahabodhi centre to the river and the hills; a car helps for Sujata and Dungeshwari.
The Monasteries of the Buddhist World
One of the joys of Bodhgaya is wandering the monasteries built by Buddhist nations, each in its own architecture and mood: the graceful Wat Thai with its golden roof, the Indosan Nipponji Japanese temple, the Tibetan monastery with its great prayer wheel, the Royal Bhutanese monastery with its vivid murals and the Chinese, Vietnamese and Burmese temples among others. An afternoon spent strolling between them is a quiet journey across the Buddhist world, all within walking distance of the Mahabodhi Temple.
Extend the Trail to Sarnath in Kashi
Bodhgaya is where the Buddha was enlightened; Sarnath, just outside Varanasi, is where he gave his first sermon, so the two belong on the same trail. If you are adding Varanasi, keep half a day for the Buddhist heart of Kashi:
- Sarnath - the deer park of the Buddha's first sermon.
- Mulagandha Kuti Vihar - the modern temple with its frescoes of the Buddha's life.
- Sarnath Archaeological Museum - home to the Ashokan lion capital, India's national emblem.
- Chaukhandi Stupa - the mound where the Buddha met his first disciples.
- Vishwa Shanti Stupa - the white peace pagoda at Sarnath.
- Thai Temple, Sarnath - the elegant Thai monastery among Sarnath's world temples.
Pair Bodhgaya with Gaya and Kashi
Neighbouring Gaya, only about 15 km away, is the great Hindu city of the pind daan and many pilgrims pair the two. Bodhgaya also sits at the end of the Buddhist trail from Varanasi, where you can keep time for the Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh and a dawn boat ride on the Ganga. Pilgrims reach Gaya and Bodhgaya from Varanasi to Gaya or from Lucknow to Gaya and follow the Buddha's path onward from Varanasi to Sarnath.
Best Time to Visit Bodhgaya
Bodhgaya is lovely in the cool months from October to March, the main Buddhist pilgrimage season, when monks and pilgrims gather from across the world and the monasteries are at their liveliest. Buddha Purnima, the Buddha's birthday in spring, is the great festival, kept at Sarnath too. Avoid the fierce Bihar summer. If you are pairing with Kashi, see our guide to the best time to visit Varanasi.
The Honest Bit
Let me be straight with you. Bodhgaya is the most welcoming and best-kept of the Buddhist sites, calm, green and easy to walk, so there is little to worry about. The one caution is around the Mahabodhi Temple: it is an active place of meditation, so dress modestly, keep quiet and note that phones and bags face restrictions at the inner shrine, with a cloakroom outside. The outlying sites, Sujata and the Dungeshwari Caves, need a car. Give the temple at dawn, wander the monasteries by day and Bodhgaya gives a peace found in few places on Earth.
Why Experience My India Is the Right Choice
I am Rajeev Sharma, guiding pilgrims for more than forty years across Bodhgaya, Gaya, Kashi, Prayagraj and Ayodhya. For Bodhgaya we handle the whole thing: a calm day at the Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree, the monasteries and the Great Buddha, the outlying Sujata and Dungeshwari sites and the Gaya pind daan or the Buddhist trail to Sarnath and Kashi if you wish. I speak Hindi, Telugu and Kannada, so South Indian families are at ease. With our Ayodhya Varanasi Tours team, the Buddha's seat is taken care of.
| Tip from Rajeev Sharma: Give the Mahabodhi Temple the first light of day. Sit beneath the Bodhi Tree as the monks chant and the lamps are lit, circle the Vajrasana and the Animesh Lochan Chaitya and let the stillness settle before the crowds build. Keep the midday for the monasteries, strolling slowly between the Thai, Japanese and Tibetan temples and the afternoon for the Great Buddha and, across the river, the Sujata Stupa. If you have a second day, drive to the Dungeshwari Caves and add the Gaya pind daan nearby. |
