The temple follows the official Banaras Hindu University ritual schedule. It opens for the pre dawn Mangala aarti, has a rest through the early afternoon, and reopens for the evening aarti, which is the most atmospheric time to visit. Because it sits inside a university campus rather than a crowded old city lane, a visit here is calm and unhurried.

As a general guide, darshan is open around the morning rituals from about 5:15 AM, through to the midday rest, and again in the evening until after the 7:25 PM Sayan aarti. The evening main aarti, from 6:00 to 7:00 PM, is the finest time to be here.

This is a temple to walk slowly through, not only to pray in, because the detail and the scale are the point. Give it more time than a quick darshan.

ॐThe Malaviya vision, the Birlas, and a Kashi Vishwanath open to all

The story of this temple is really the story of an idea. The original Kashi Vishwanath in the old city was destroyed and rebuilt many times over the centuries, and in the 1930s Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the founder of Banaras Hindu University, set out to build a serene replica of it on his new campus, a place where the pursuit of knowledge and the life of the spirit could sit side by side. The Birla family, the great industrialists and philanthropists, took on the task, laid the foundation in 1931, and saw it through 35 years of careful work to completion in 1966.

That last point matters more than it first appears. Where the old city temple has stricter norms about who may enter the sanctum, the BHU temple was built to be open to everyone, which makes it one of the easiest and most welcoming Shiva temples in Varanasi for foreign visitors and first time travellers. ॐA calm morning on campus, in my own words

When guests are worn out by the intensity of the old city, or when someone in the group is not Hindu and worries about being turned away at the sanctum, this is the temple I bring them to. You drive in through the BHU gate, past the university buildings and the students, and then the road runs under big old trees until the white marble tower appears above the green. It could not feel more different from the lanes of Kashi Vishwanath, and yet it is a copy of exactly that temple.

Inside, I slow everyone down and point at the walls, where the whole Bhagavad Gita is carved into the marble. I tell them that Malaviya, who built the university, wanted a temple where a scholar and a farmer and a foreign guest could all stand together, and that this is why nobody is turned away here. We climb to the upper verandah, look out over the lawns, and it is one of the few genuinely quiet, cool, unhurried hours you can have at a great temple in this city.

In more than forty years of guiding, I have learned that this temple does something the others cannot: it lets people who felt like outsiders in Kashi feel completely welcome. That is worth the short drive out to the campus.

ॐEntry, rules, and what to carry

Entry

• Entry is free and open to all castes, creeds and religions, with no paid VIP or Sugam pass for general darshan.

• The temple is inside the BHU campus, about 1.7 km from the main Lanka gate; you pass through the university gate to reach it.

Dress and conduct

• Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, as at any temple.

• Footwear comes off at the entrance; leave it at the counter or in the car.

• Keep your voice low inside, especially during aarti.

Photography and what to carry

• Photography of the exterior, the tower and the gardens is usually welcome and very rewarding; check for any signs near the sanctum and avoid flash during aarti.

• Carry a little cash for prasad and the shoe counter, water in summer, and comfortable footwear.

ॐHow to reach New Vishwanath Temple (BHU)

The temple sits deep inside the Banaras Hindu University campus in the south of Varanasi, which is what keeps it so peaceful. You enter through the BHU gate and continue in toward the temple.

Because it is inside a large campus, a car with a driver who knows the gate and the internal roads saves a lot of confusion, and lets you combine the temple with the wider BHU campus and the southern cluster in one outing.

• Allow 45 minutes to an hour, more if you want to read the walls and enjoy the gardens.

ॐMaha Shivratri and festivals

As a Shiva temple, the New Vishwanath Temple comes fully alive on Maha Shivratri, the great night of Shiva, when the campus temple sees its largest crowds and the university makes special arrangements for the flow of devotees. The night is marked with abhishek, extended worship and a festive atmosphere. Shravan Mondays and other Shiva festivals also bring more visitors than usual, so plan a little extra time on those days.

• The campus setting is far calmer and less crowded than the old city, which helps a great deal.

• The approach is a walk under trees; a car can bring you close, and e rickshaws run inside the campus.

• The upper floor and verandah are reached by stairs, which may not suit everyone; the ground floor sanctum is accessible.
